Chinese Cat Name Generator
Mandarin cat names with characters and meanings
Generate Chinese cat names written as pinyin with simplified characters and an English meaning: Mimi (咪咪, kitty), Xiao Hu (小虎, little tiger), Baozi (包子, steamed bun) and Da Ju (大橘, big orange). Coat, food, tea, luck, myth and habit names are all here, plus a few labeled English and Cantonese ones.
About Chinese cat names
Cat names in Chinese are mostly ordinary words, and this list writes each one three ways: plain pinyin without tone marks, simplified characters, and a short English gloss. The most familiar shape is a doubled syllable, the same baby-talk pattern used for a child's home name, as in Mimi, Qiuqiu and Huahua. Next come Xiao (little) and Da (big) set before a color or a thing: Xiao Hu is little tiger, and Da Ju, big orange, is a fond name for a hefty ginger cat.
Looks and food supply most of the rest. Sanhua is a calico, Lihua a tabby and Nainiu (dairy cow) a black and white cat, while a round white kitten becomes Xueqiu, Tangyuan or Mantou. Tea, fruit, luck words such as Yuanbao and Zhaocai, the solar terms of the old calendar, and figures from Journey to the West and Water Margin are here too, along with habit names like Chanmao (greedy cat) and Hulu (purr).
A small group of old coat names comes from traditional cat lore, where a black cat with a white belly is Wuyun Gaixue, dark clouds over snow. Thirty English names with a Chinese theme and eighteen Cantonese ones are labeled as such. Pinyin can be shared by different words, so copy the characters along with it.
How to choose Chinese cat names
- Say the name out loud before you choose. Plain pinyin shows the syllables but not the tones, so look the characters up in a dictionary app to hear them: Mimi is said high and level, and Baozi is a high syllable followed by a light one.
- Match the coat word to the cat: Da Ju or Jumao for an orange cat, Sanhua for a calico, Lihua for a tabby, Nainiu for black and white, Heitan or Meiqiu for a black cat and Xueqiu for a white one.
- Two cats can share a theme: Baozi and Jiaozi, Heizi and Baizi (the black and white stones of Go), Xiao Qiao and Da Qiao, or Jinjiao and Yinjiao.
- Short names are the easiest to call. For a long one, double a syllable for everyday use, so Tangyuan becomes Yuanyuan and Xiaolongbao becomes Baobao.
- Copy the characters with the pinyin if you plan to engrave a tag, and ask a fluent reader to check them first. One spelling can stand for several words: Lihua written 狸花 is a tabby, while 梨花 with the same pinyin is pear blossom.
Frequently asked questions
What are familiar cat names in China?
Mimi is the classic, and it is also the sound people make to call a cat. Doubled names such as Qiuqiu and Huahua, food names such as Baozi, Tangyuan and Naicha, and coat names such as Xiao Hei and Da Ju are everyday choices. Each entry gives the characters and the meaning.
Which of these Chinese cat names are funny?
The humor is in the meaning, not the sound. Habit names tease a cat for what it does: Chanmao is a greedy cat, Ganfanwang is the king of chowing down, Tuolaji is a tractor for a rumbling purr, and Moyu means slacking off. A big dish on a small animal works the same way, as in Mapodoufu or Xiaolongbao.
What do Xiao and Da mean in a cat name?
Xiao means little and Da means big, and either one goes in front of a color, an animal or a food: Xiao Bai is little white one and Da Hei is big black one. In a home with two cats they can mark the younger and the older, or simply the smaller and the larger. A is a fond prefix used the same way in southern China, as in A Hua and A Fu.
Why is the pinyin written without tone marks?
Plain pinyin is easier to read and type, and the simplified characters beside each name carry the exact word. Eighteen entries are Cantonese words in their familiar English spelling, such as Siu Mai and Lai See, and each is labeled Cantonese. Thirty are English names with a Chinese theme, such as Dumpling, Jade and Lychee, labeled English with the Chinese word after them.
