Names for Maine Coon cats, led by the map of Maine: Katahdin, Allagash, Sebago and Monhegan, with north-woods picks like Tamarack and Lynx, coast names like Schooner and Chowder, gentle giants, Viking names, bushy-tail ideas such as Plume and old Yankee farm names like Ezra and Mabel.

About Maine Coon names

The Maine Coon is the official state cat of Maine and one of the largest domestic breeds, so the biggest group in this list is a map of the state: peaks like Katahdin, Kineo and Bigelow, lakes and rivers such as Sebago, Allagash and Kennebec, and towns and islands from Bangor to Monhegan. North-woods names (Tamarack, Loon, Lynx, Birchbark) and coast and kitchen names (Schooner, Dory, Chowder, Whoopie Pie) fill in the rest.

A full-grown Maine Coon is a gentle giant, hence Goliath, Sasquatch and Big Mama. The ruff, ear tufts and tufted paws give Mane, Tufts, Britches and Snowshoes, and the long bushy tail gives Plume, Fantail and Feather Duster.

Nobody knows exactly how the breed began, and the popular stories are legends. One says Marie Antoinette's cats were shipped to Wiscasset ahead of an escape she never made, another credits a sea captain named Charles Coon, and a third says Viking ship cats came ashore, which is why Leif, Freydis and Skogkatt are here. The tale of a raccoon cross is biologically impossible, but it left us Bandit and Ringtail. Yankee farm names such as Ezra and Mehitable suit a breed long kept as a barn mouser, and Cosey is the brown tabby that won the 1895 cat show at Madison Square Garden.

How to choose Maine Coon names

  • Keep the call name to one or two syllables and let the long place name be the formal one. Mooselookmeguntic can answer to Moose, Agamenticus to Aggie and Damariscotta to Scotty.
  • Say a Maine place name the local way before you settle on it. Calais sounds like CAL-us, Bangor is BANG-gor and Machias is muh-CHY-us.
  • Maine Coons grow slowly and can take three to five years to reach full size, so a giant name like Goliath or Mammoth will fit better every year, and an ironic one like Tiny or Half Pint only gets funnier.
  • Let the coat or the feet decide. Smoky, Tawny, Sable, Marble and Cameo describe coats, and Thumbs, Mitts and Six Toes suit a polydactyl cat, a trait that was once common in the breed.
  • For two cats, pick a pair from one style that does not rhyme: Katahdin and Kineo, Schooner and Dory, Leif and Freydis, or Ezra and Mabel.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool names for a Maine Coon?

The names that set a Maine Coon apart come from Maine itself: Katahdin, Allagash, Kineo, Acadia, Casco and Moosehead. North-woods names such as Tamarack, Lynx and Boreal have the same feel, and Viking names like Ragnar, Sigrid and Gunnar suit a big, shaggy cat.

Are Maine Coons really part raccoon?

No. Cats and raccoons cannot interbreed, so that origin story is a legend and nothing more. It probably grew out of the brown tabby coat and the ringed, bushy tail, and it is the reason names like Bandit, Ringtail, Mask and Trash Panda are in the list.

What are good names for a female Maine Coon?

Every style here has female names. Try Acadia, Augusta or Camden from the map, Marina or Periwinkle from the coast, Freya, Astrid or Solveig from the Viking group, Leona or Tigress for the mane, and Mabel, Hattie or Hepzibah from the old farm names. Big Mama and Mama Bear suit a large queen.

Are any famous Maine Coons in the list?

Two. Cosey was a brown tabby female who won the cat show held at Madison Square Garden in 1895, one of the first big shows in the United States. Mrs. Norris is the caretaker's cat in the Harry Potter films, a part played by Maine Coons.
