Names for Siamese cats and their colorpoint cousins: short Thai nicknames like Mali, Ploy, Dao and Lek, old Siam names such as Wichienmat, point colors like Seal and Lilac, blue-eye names like Sapphire, voice names like Aria and Meezer, and coffee and cream picks like Mocha.

About Siamese cat names

The Siamese comes from Thailand, the old kingdom of Siam, so the largest group here is Thai. Thai people go by short nicknames that are everyday words, and they make natural cat names: Noi (little), Lek (small), Nok (bird), Fah (sky), Dao (star), Mali (jasmine), Ploy (gemstone), Mook (pearl) and Kaew (crystal). Real Thai places follow, from Ayutthaya and Sukhothai to Chiang Mai, with a few food names that need a label: Tom Yum, Som Tam, Khao Soi and Pad Thai are dishes, not nicknames.

Old Thai manuscripts known as the Tamra Maew, or cat poems, describe the breed as the Wichienmat, which means moon diamond, alongside the Korat or Si Sawat, the Suphalak and the Khao Manee. All of those names are in the list. Stories of Siamese cats guarding temples are tradition, not record.

The rest describes the cat. Point colors give Seal, Cocoa, Truffle, Lilac and Bluebell for the four Siamese colors (seal, chocolate, blue and lilac), plus Flame and Lynx Point for colorpoint cousins. Blue eyes give Sapphire, Azure and Cobalt, the famous voice gives Aria, Diva, Chatterbox and Meezer, and an elegant build suits Jade, Opal and Silk. A cream coat with coffee-colored tips suggests Latte, Mocha and Toffee.

How to choose Siamese cat names

  • Siamese kittens are born almost white and their points darken over the first months, so wait before you commit to a color name such as Seal, Lilac or Bluebell, or choose a Thai or voice name that fits from day one.
  • Thai nicknames are one or two syllables, which is what a call name needs. English spellings vary, so Fah is also written Fa, Mook is also Muk and Waan is also Wan. Pick one spelling and keep it.
  • A Siamese will talk back, so choose a name you enjoy saying many times a day. Aria, Echo, Gabby and Meezer all suit a cat with opinions.
  • For a pair, match two names from one style: Dao and Tawan (star and sun), Koko and Yum Yum, Latte and Mocha, or Sapphire and Opal.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool names for a Siamese cat?

Thai words with strong meanings are hard to beat: Tawan (sun), Pailin (sapphire), Singto (lion) and Suea (tiger). Wichienmat, the breed's own Thai name, is in the list too, along with Cobalt, Eclipse, Penumbra and Banshee for the eyes, the dark points and the voice.

What do the Thai names in the list mean?

They are everyday words of the kind Thai people use as nicknames. Noi is little, Lek is small, Nok is bird, Fah is sky, Dao is star, Mali is jasmine, Bua is lotus, Ploy is a gemstone, Mook is pearl and Maew simply means cat. Thai is a tonal language, so the English spellings are only approximate.

Which point color names suit my Siamese?

Seal points suit Seal, Cocoa, Truffle and Sealskin. Chocolate points suit Chocolate, Cacao and Hazelnut. Blue points suit Bluebell, Smoke, Dove and Frost, and lilac points suit Lilac, Wisteria and Thistle. Flame and Lynx Point belong to the colorpoint cousins of the Siamese.

Are the famous Siamese cats of books and films in the list?

A few are. Koko and Yum Yum come from Lilian Jackson Braun's mystery novels, D.C. from That Darn Cat, Tao from The Incredible Journey, Pyewacket from Bell, Book and Candle and Sagwa from Amy Tan's picture book. Siam was a real cat, sent from Bangkok to First Lady Lucy Hayes in the late 1870s.
