About fantasy cat names

Cats come with more folklore than almost any other pet, so a fantasy name for one does not have to be invented from nothing. Scottish and Irish stories tell of the Cait Sith, a fairy cat, and Welsh legend has Cath Palug, a monstrous cat that also turns up in Arthurian romance. Grimalkin is an old word for a gray cat, and as Graymalkin it is the name a witch calls out in the first scene of Macbeth. Pyewacket comes from an English witch-hunting pamphlet of the 1640s, and Bastet is the cat goddess of ancient Egypt.

This generator has 500 names in that spirit. Beside the folklore cats there are given names from Welsh, Irish, Norse and Arthurian tradition (Eira, Fand, Hnoss), elvish-sounding inventions (Faelith, Sylvarin), words for cat from around the world (Neko, Koshka, Kedi), spell and alchemy words, gemstones, stars, herbs, big-cat names and feline epithets such as Moonwhisker, Sootnose and Dewclaw. Titled cats (Baron von Mouser, Keeper of the Ninth Life) and cozy tavern or ship cats (Inkpot, Farthing, Binnacle) fill in the rest.

Some of the choices have a quiet logic. Regulus, Denebola and Algieba are stars of Leo, the lion. Cymophane and Chatoyant both point to the cat's-eye effect in gemstones, and catkins take their name from an old word for kitten.

How to choose fantasy cat names

  • A name you will call across the house should be short. A long title such as Keeper of the Ninth Life works best with an everyday call name like Nine.
  • Match the name to the coat or the eyes. Peridot and Heliodor suit green and gold eyes, Smokefur and Sootnose suit gray and black cats, and Calico and Marbleback say what they mean.
  • For a familiar or a game character, pick the tradition first. A witch's cat from an English village might be Rutterkin or Malkin, while a temple cat in a desert setting could be Mafdet or Miu.
  • If a folklore name is hard to spell, keep its meaning instead. Jolakotturinn is the Icelandic Yule Cat, and Yule Cat is in the list too.
  • Say the name with its title out loud. Lady Nightshade and Archmage Tibbs are at their best on a cat that ignores everyone.

Frequently asked questions

What are some mythical cats to name a cat after?

The Cait Sith of Scottish and Irish folklore, the Welsh Cath Palug, Japan's Bakeneko and Nekomata, Iceland's Yule Cat and the French Matagot are all in the list. Egyptian names include Bastet, Sekhmet and Mafdet, and Miu and Mau, which are ancient Egyptian words for cat.

What is a good fantasy name for a black cat?

Old witch's-familiar names such as Grimalkin, Pyewacket and Rutterkin are the classic choice. For something softer, try a twilight word like Vesper or Gloaming, or an epithet such as Nightprowl or Sootnose. A dark mineral name such as Hematite is a less common pick than Onyx or Jet.

Are these names from a specific book or game?

Not from any one book or game. The folklore names come from old stories, poems and legends, the given names from Welsh, Irish, Norse and Arthurian tradition, and the rest are ordinary words or new coinages such as Faelith and Thalendir. We have not searched every invented name, and two-part epithets such as Duskpelt or Quickclaw are built the way cat-clan novels build theirs, so some may also turn up in a novel or a game.

Can I use these for a catfolk character or a familiar in a tabletop game?

Yes. Short names like Miu, Tibert and Kasha work for player characters, and the epithets double as clan or deed names: Silentstep, Quickclaw, Mistwalker. For a familiar, the spell words and herbs (Cantrip, Periapt, Catmint) fit a caster's pet well.
