Persian Cat Name Generator
Farsi words and fluffy names for Persian cats
Names for Persian cats in both senses: real Persian (Farsi) words with their meanings, such as Pashmak (cotton candy), Makhmal (velvet), Barfi (snowy) and Shahbanu (empress), and English names for the breed, from Sir Fluffington and Powder Puff to Pancake, Cameo and Blue Cream.
About Persian cat names
A Persian cat can take its name from two places, and this list of 1,000 draws on both. A little over half of the entries are real Persian (Farsi) words and names, each with a short English gloss in parentheses. The rest are English names for the breed itself: the long coat, the round flat face and the calm lap-cat ways. The breed is named for Persia, today's Iran.
The Persian entries begin with the words people use around a cat: Gorbeh (cat), Pishi (kitty), Malus (cute, cuddly) and Azizam (my dear). Then come sweets, fruit and spice such as Pashmak, Nabat, Anar and Zaferan, flowers, sky words and gems such as Laleh, Mahtab and Firuzeh, silk and carpet words, heroes of the Shahnameh, classical poets, royal titles and old cities. Sacred names are left out, since many families would not give them to a pet.
One spelling runs throughout: plain vowels with no length marks, kh for the sound in Scottish loch, gh for a throaty g and zh for the s in measure. English entries carry no gloss. They cover fluff and clouds (Powder Puff, Cumulus), pampered titles (Sir Fluffington, Duchess of Fluff), coat colors (Smoke, Chinchilla, Cameo, Blue Cream), soft fabrics and desserts, and gentle jokes about the face (Pancake, Button Nose).
How to choose Persian cat names
- Match the coat first: Barfi (snowy) or Sefid (white) for a white Persian, Dudi (smoky) or Khakestari (ash gray) for a smoke or a blue, Talai (golden) or Zaferan (saffron) for a golden and Meshki (jet black) for a black cat.
- Say a Persian word aloud before you choose it. The stress usually falls on the last syllable, so Pashmak is pash-MAK and Laleh is la-LEH.
- Names of one or two syllables are the easiest to call across a room: Pishi, Nabat, Anar, Tala, Gaz, Yas and Naz.
- For two cats, take names that already belong together: Khosrow and Shirin, Leyli and Majnun, Bizhan and Manizheh, Vis and Ramin, or Shir and Shekar, which are milk and sugar.
- A grand title needs a call name to go with it. Sir Fluffington can be Fluff at home, and Shahzadeh can be Shazdeh, the way people say it in everyday speech.
Frequently asked questions
What are some Persian (Farsi) names for a cat?
Gorbeh is the Persian word for cat and Pishi means kitty. Good starting points in this list come from food and softness: Pashmak (cotton candy), Makhmal (velvet), Nabat (rock candy) and Shirin (sweet). For something grander there are Rostam, Shahbanu (empress) and Shahzadeh.
What do you name a fluffy Persian cat?
Name the coat. Powder Puff, Cumulus, Thistledown, Cashmere and Meringue all say soft in English. The Persian words do the same job: Pashmalu (fluffy, woolly), Abrisham (silk) and Panbeh (cotton).
Why do I see other spellings of these Persian words?
Persian is written in the Perso-Arabic script, so every Latin spelling is an approximation. This list keeps to one plain scheme with no length marks, where kh, gh and zh each stand for a single sound. Elsewhere you may find Firouzeh for Firuzeh or Malous for Malus, and those are the same words.
Why are there no religious names in the list?
Names of God and of revered religious figures are held in respect, and many families would not give them to an animal. The list keeps to everyday words instead: food, flowers, colors, endearments, classical poets and heroes of the Shahnameh such as Rostam, Sohrab and Rudabeh.
