Biome Name Generator

Real biome names are built from two parts: a climate or landform word and a vegetation or substrate word. Temperate rainforest, alpine tundra, mangrove swamp, shortgrass steppe and cold desert all follow that formula, and ecologists layer on local terms that carry a lot of flavor: taiga and muskeg from Russian and Cree, fynbos and veld from Afrikaans, cerrado, caatinga and paramo from South America, erg, reg and hamada from the Sahara, machair and carr from Britain. Those words exist because the landscape needed a name plain English lacked, which makes them excellent raw material for a fantasy map.

Invented biomes sound right when they respect the same logic. Pair a texture or mood word with a genuine landform (Glassrock Flats, Frostfern Taiga, Witchlight Bog, Saltwillow Delta) rather than stacking adjectives, and vary the landform nouns: heath, moor, fen, mire, carr, steppe, veldt, scrub, barrens, badlands, shoals and grotto all do more work than repeating Forest and Wastes. Alien and sci-fi biomes come from swapping the chemistry (methane lakes, nitrogen ice flats, silica forests, fulgurite dunes) or the physics (tidal-lock twilight belts, levitating isles).

This list mixes real terrestrial and marine biomes and regional ecoregion names with original fantasy, underground, deep-sea and alien biomes for a Minecraft mod, a hex map or a planet survey.
