About jungle names

Good jungle names do more than say "green." They signal danger, humidity and depth. Real rainforest names come from three sources: a river or basin (the Xingu, the Congo, the Kinabatangan), the people who live there (the Lacandon Jungle, the Ituri Forest of the Mbuti), or a colonial nickname that stuck (the Green Hell of the Gran Chaco, the Impenetrable Forest of Bwindi). Fantasy settings copy the pattern: Chult and Stranglethorn Vale in Dungeons & Dragons and Warcraft are named for a region and a defining feature respectively.

Structure matters. A single word or place plus a terrain noun sounds like a real geographic label: Danum Valley, Corcovado Deep, Tapajós Forest. Descriptor names lean on sensation and threat: the Steaming Reach, the Fever Basin, the Weeping Jungle. Creature and plant names give the region a mascot: Harpy Eagle Canopy, Bushmaster Green, Rafflesia Hollow. Names built from local languages, whether Mayan (Yaxha, Ek Balam), Bantu (Ubangi, Kisimba), Malay (Rimba Kabut, Belantara Naga) or Sanskrit (Nagaloka, Vanadevi), instantly locate your jungle on a particular continent without a word of exposition.

  • For threat, use verbs and body sensations rather than 'dark' or 'shadow': choking, weeping, steaming, rotting, screaming, drowned.

Rainforest is the scientific term for a dense, high-rainfall forest with a closed canopy. Jungle usually means the tangled, sunlit undergrowth at a rainforest's edge or clearings, so it carries a wilder, more adventurous connotation, which is why fiction prefers it.

How are real jungles named?
