About fantasy road names

Roads on a fantasy map carry history the way rivers carry water. Pre-modern roads were named in a handful of ways, and the same patterns make an invented one feel old. Some were named for who built or owned them (the King's Road, the Emperor's Highway, Via Aurelia), some for what travelled on them (the Salt Road, the Amber Road, the Drovers' Road, the Tin Road), some for where they went (Harrow Road, the Coast Road, the Great North Road) and some for what happened along them (the Corpse Road, the Gallows Road, the Road of Sighs). Old roads acquire 'Old' in front once a newer one is built beside them.

The word after the name matters too. A highway or causeway suggests engineering and a state that maintains it; a track, trace, drove or ride suggests hooves and mud; a way, path or walk suggests age and pilgrims; a stair, climb or switchback tells you the terrain. Dwarven roads run deep and underground, elven roads are barely roads at all, desert routes are measured in wells, and city roads in medieval worlds are named for the trades practised on them.

This list mixes all of those registers, from imperial roads to grim little lanes, so your road network explains your kingdom's trade, wars and religion by its labels alone.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the main roads for what moves on them (salt, wool, tin, pilgrims, armies); the names then tell players where the money and the danger are.
  • Put 'Old' in front of a road that has been bypassed (the Old North Road beside the King's Highway) and you have implied centuries of history in one word.
  • Vary the suffix to match terrain and upkeep: Highway and Causeway for engineered routes, Track and Drove for rural ones, Stair and Climb in mountains, Portage beside rivers.
  • Give a few roads sinister or local names (the Corpse Road, Widowmaker's Climb, Gibbet Cross Road). Real medieval maps are full of them and they seed adventure hooks.
  • Match cultures: Latin Via names for an empire, -gate streets for a Norse-flavoured city, Karak or Deep Road for dwarves, Road of Forty Wells for a desert caravan route.

Frequently asked questions

What is a corpse road or lych way?

In medieval England a corpse road or lych way was the route along which the dead were carried from an outlying village to the parish church with burial rights. They were often long, crossed wild country and gathered ghost stories, which makes them perfect for fantasy maps. Several entries in the list use this tradition.

What is the difference between a road, a way, a track and a causeway?

A road is the general term; a way or path is older and often unpaved; a track, drove or trace is a route worn by animals and carts; a causeway is a raised, built road across wet or low ground; a highway is a major route maintained by a ruler. Choosing the right word instantly tells readers how important and how well-kept the route is.

Why do fantasy cities have streets named for trades?

Because real medieval cities did. Guilds clustered in one street, so you got Tanners' Street, Fletchers' Lane, Goldsmiths' Row and so on. Norse-influenced towns like York used -gate (from gata, street), giving names like Coppergate and Fishergate. Both patterns appear in the list for use in fantasy towns.

Can I use these road names in a published book or game?

Yes. Road names are not copyrighted and these are free to use in novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and maps. A few, like the King's Road or the Great East Road, are common enough to appear in well-known works, so pick more distinctive entries if you want something unmistakably your own.
