Generate fantasy river names in the mold of the Anduin, the Trident, and the Brandywine: ancient river-words, invented tongues, and descriptive English names for everything from a mountain torrent to a continent-spanning waterway.
About fantasy river names
Rivers carry the oldest names on any real map. Avon, Ouse, Esk, and Usk all just mean 'water' or 'river' in languages older than English, which is why fantasy rivers sound most convincing when they are short, ancient-seeming, and slightly opaque: the Anduin, the Isen, the Trident, the Rhoyne. A one- or two-syllable name with 'the' or 'River' in front of it will pass on almost any map.
English also gives you a set of smaller water words to grade rivers by size and region: burn and beck (Scottish and Northern English streams), brook and bourne (Southern), run and race (American and mill streams), fleet (a tidal creek), wash (a shallow crossing). Coldburn, Troutbeck, Sarnbrook, and Ebbfleet are the tributaries; the great river they feed deserves its own proper name. Descriptive compounds (the Greywater, the Blackwater Rush, the Milkwater) sit in between and are especially useful for rivers colored by glacier silt, peat, or blood.
Mythic rivers form a third register: the Styx, the Lethe, the Gjöll that borders the Norse underworld, or invented ones like the River of Souls and the River That Runs Backwards. Use one of these for the river that matters most to your plot, and let the rest be plain Sarn, Kell, and Ysk.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name a river system consistently: the trunk gets a proper name (the Sarn), tributaries get compounds (Sarnbeck, Coldburn), and the crossing gets a ford (Sarn Ford, Sarn Athrad).
- Two names for one river is realistic: the elves call it Baranduin, the hobbits call it Brandywine. Different peoples along its length should disagree.
- Match suffixes to region: burn and beck for northern hills, brook and bourne for gentle lowlands, run and race for frontier country.
- Use color words (Grey-, Black-, White-, Milk-) to hint at what the river carries: silt, peat, snowmelt, or chalk.
- Reserve 'River of X' titles for one or two legendary waterways so they keep their impact.
Frequently asked questions
How does Tolkien name rivers?
He uses Sindarin words for water and flow (duin means 'large river', as in Anduin and Baranduin), English compounds for hobbit and Rohan country (Brandywine, Snowbourn), and simple ancient-sounding names for wild rivers (the Isen, the Gwathló). Copying that mix of formal, folk, and short names is a strong template.
Why do so many real rivers have names that just mean 'river'?
Because they were named by the earliest inhabitants and later peoples adopted the word without knowing what it meant. Avon, Ouse, Esk, Usk, and Dee all derive from Celtic or pre-Celtic words for water; a fantasy river called simply 'the Ur' or 'the Ith' follows the same logic.
Can I use these fantasy river names commercially?
Yes for the invented and real-world names. A few names from published settings (the Anduin, the Trident, the Chionthar) are included as reference examples and should not be used in commercial work.
What is the difference between a burn, a beck, and a brook?
All mean a small stream. Burn is Scottish and Northumbrian, beck is from Old Norse and used in the Lake District and Yorkshire, and brook is the general Southern English term. Using them tells readers where on the map they are.
