Generate fantasy lake names in the tradition of Mirrormere, the Long Lake, and Lake Hylia: real Old English and Norse water words, legendary lakes, and haunted or sacred waters for any fantasy map.

About fantasy lake names

Real lake names give fantasy maps their texture, and English happens to have a rich vocabulary for standing water. Mere is Old English for a lake (Windermere, Grasmere), tarn is Norse for a small mountain lake, water is used for the larger English lakes (Wastwater, Coniston Water), and the Celtic languages give loch, lough, and llyn. Tolkien built directly on this: Mirrormere sits below Moria, the Long Lake beside Esgaroth, and the Mere of Dead Faces in the marshes. Using the same suffixes makes an invented lake sound like it has always been there.

Legend supplies the second layer. Lake Avernus was the entrance to the underworld, Lake Stymphalia hid Heracles' man-eating birds, Llyn y Fan Fach is home to the Lady of the Lake, and the Lady of Arthurian romance rises from an unnamed lake to hand over Excalibur. Descriptive titles (the Lake of Fallen Stars, the Lake That Remembers) work in that register, especially for a lake that has a story attached to it.

For your own map, decide whether the lake is ordinary or magical before you name it. Ordinary lakes get a compound of color, size, or animal plus mere or water. Magical or sacred lakes earn a longer title, a legend, or a name in an invented tongue like Aelinuial or Elunara.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use -mere, -water, and Tarn for everyday lakes; save 'The Lake of...' titles for waters with a legend attached.
  • Loch, Lough, and Llyn instantly place a lake in a Scottish, Irish, or Welsh-flavored region; keep them consistent across one area of the map.
  • Give a great inland sea two names: the formal one on the map and the sailors' or locals' nickname (the Sea of Fallen Stars, the Weeping Waters).
  • Name volcanic lakes with fire and glass words (Caldera Mere, Obsidian Mere) and glacial ones with cold or mirror words (the Frozen Eye, Ice-Mirror Lake) so terrain and name agree.
  • Match the language of the lake to its region: an elvish lake should not sit next to a Norse tarn unless the map explains why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mere, a tarn, and a loch?

A mere is a broad, shallow lake (Old English), a tarn is a small lake in a mountain hollow (Old Norse), and loch is simply Scottish Gaelic for lake, with lough the Irish spelling and llyn the Welsh word.

How does Tolkien name lakes in Middle-earth?

He uses English compounds for common lakes (the Long Lake, Mirrormere), Elvish for ancient or holy waters (Cuiviénen, Nen Hithoel, Aelinuial), and descriptive titles for haunted places (the Mere of Dead Faces). Mixing those three registers is a good model.

Can I use these fantasy lake names in my D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. Real lake names and the invented ones here are free to use; the handful borrowed from published settings (Lake Hylia, Lake Calenhad, the Moonsea) are shown as examples and should be avoided in commercial work.
