Generate D&D 5e Tabaxi names the way Volo's Guide describes them: a full poetic name like Cloud on the Mountaintop, the short nickname the party actually uses (Cloud), and a clan name drawn from a landmark. Ready for rogues, monks, rangers and bards.

About tabaxi names

Tabaxi names in Dungeons & Dragons follow a memorable rule from Volo's Guide to Monsters: each Tabaxi has a single, poetic name inspired by an omen or event at their birth or a quirk of their personality, and their clan mates shorten it into a nickname. The examples Wizards of the Coast gives are Cloud on the Mountaintop (Cloud), Five Timber (Timber), Jade Shoe (Jade), Left-Handed Hummingbird (Bird), Seven Thundercloud (Thunder), Skirt of Snakes (Snake) and Smoking Mirror (Smoke). Every entry in this generator follows that same shape, with the everyday nickname in parentheses so you can put both on your character sheet.

Clan names come from a geographic feature near the clan's home, such as Snoring Mountain or the Winding Blue River, and are used more like a place of origin than a surname. A full introduction might be 'Cloud on the Mountaintop, of the Snoring Mountain clan, but call me Cloud.'

Good Tabaxi names read like a line of poetry or a fragment of a fable: a concrete image (a heron, a candle, a broken wheel), a small twist or moment (standing still, in the window, left uncorked) and, ideally, a hint at temperament. Rogues suit sly, thief-flavoured names, monks and clerics suit still, natural imagery, and bards do well with names that are almost jokes. Numbers are a canon flourish, so Six Broken Arrows or Two Copper Coins are as authentic as any nature name.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Write both halves on your sheet: the full name for introductions and roleplay, the nickname for the table. Players will use the nickname 95 percent of the time.
  • Tie the name to a birth omen or a personality quirk and mention it once in play; it turns a pretty name into a hook the DM can use.
  • Choose imagery that matches class: prowling and stealing for rogues, weather and stillness for monks and druids, tall tales and songs for bards.
  • Add a clan name from a landmark (of the Red Ridge, of the Slow River) rather than a surname; Tabaxi do not use family names.
  • Avoid making every name a nature haiku. Canon examples include shoes, timber and mirrors, so household objects and small mishaps are fair game and often funnier.

Frequently asked questions

How do Tabaxi names work in D&D 5e?

Each Tabaxi has one poetic name based on a birth omen or personal quirk, such as Cloud on the Mountaintop, and a short nickname taken from it, like Cloud. Clan names come from a nearby landmark, for example the Snoring Mountain clan, and are used in place of a surname.

Are Tabaxi names gendered?

No. Volo's Guide gives no separate male and female lists, and the poetic style is gender-neutral by nature. Any name here works for a Tabaxi of any gender.

What are the official Tabaxi example names?

Volo's Guide to Monsters lists Cloud on the Mountaintop (Cloud), Five Timber (Timber), Jade Shoe (Jade), Left-Handed Hummingbird (Bird), Seven Thundercloud (Thunder), Skirt of Snakes (Snake) and Smoking Mirror (Smoke), and names the Snoring Mountain clan as an example clan.

Can I use these names for a Khajiit, Leonin or other cat-folk character?

You can, but note that Khajiit in Elder Scrolls use very different conventions (honorific prefixes like J' and M' and Ta'agra names), and Leonin have their own style. The omen-based two-part structure is specifically Tabaxi, though it adapts easily to homebrew cat-folk.
