Yi Ti Name Generator
Two-part names for the Golden Empire of the east
Generate Yi Ti names for the old empire in the far east of Essos: two-part names such as Thar Loq and Jaro Qai, titled figures such as Bu Qen, Ninth Azure Emperor and Pol Vei, Shield of the Five Forts, plus names for the island of Leng and cities such as Thoqui.
About Yi Ti names
Yi Ti is the old empire on the Jade Sea in the far east of Essos, in A Song of Ice and Fire. The books give only a dozen or so YiTish names, and they share a clear sound: two short words, often with a q, as in Bu Gai, Pol Qo, Lo Tho, Har Loi and Jar Joq. The first word seems to run in a line of rulers, so every scarlet emperor the books name is a Lo and every sea-green emperor a Jar. Each god-emperor is remembered by dynasty color and number: Bu Gai is the seventeenth azure emperor.
The 14 names taken from the books are marked "(canon)". Every other entry is new, built from the same short syllables rather than borrowed from any real language. Fewer than a third are bare two-part names such as Thar Loq or Jaro Qai. The rest carry more: a dynasty color and number, a general's or sorcerer's epithet, a court office, a trade or a home city.
You will also find court ladies, merchant princes of the caravan roads, longer names for the island of Leng, and cities and palaces in the pattern of Yin, Jinqi and Tiqui. The books offer almost nothing for Leng or for YiTish women, so treat those names as our own invention.
How to choose Yi Ti names
- Keep it to two short words and let one of them end in q, l, r or n. Vol Thoq, Sar Loq and Qel Tho all sit close to the sound of the names in the books.
- Share the first word across a family or a dynasty. In the books the named scarlet emperors are Lo and the named sea-green emperors are Jar, so two siblings in your story might be Thar Qo and Thar Loq.
- For a ruler, add the dynasty color and a number, as in Har Qol, Seventh Grey Emperor. The numbers on the new emperors are invented, so change them to fit your own timeline.
- Give minor characters an office or a trade instead of a longer name. Zel Vai the Calendar Keeper or Tuq Vor the Potter tells a reader who they are at once.
- Say a name aloud before you use it at the table. Short syllables with a q can land close to English words, so pick the ones your group can say with a straight face.
Frequently asked questions
Are these Yi Ti names from the books?
Only 14 of them. Those are marked in the list, for example Bu Gai (canon), Pol Qo (canon) and Mengo Quen (canon). The books give only a dozen or so YiTish names, so every other entry is a new name built from the same sounds, and none of the new ones should be read as canon.
How are YiTish names put together?
The names in the books are two short words, such as Lo Han or Har Loi, and many have a q, as in Jar Joq and Chai Duq. The first word often repeats inside one dynasty. The new names here follow that pattern: Dor Zel, Quen Roi, Mengo Thaq.
What do the colors in the emperor names mean?
The god-emperors of Yi Ti are grouped into dynasties named for colors, and a ruler is counted within his dynasty: Lo Tho is the twenty-second scarlet emperor. Entries such as Bu Qen, Ninth Azure Emperor and Jar Thun, Fourth Sea-Green Emperor copy that style with invented rulers.
What is the difference between Yi Ti and YiTish?
Yi Ti is the empire, and YiTish is the word for its people and things, so a YiTish name is a name from Yi Ti. This page is a fan resource for role-playing games and fan fiction and has no connection to the author, a publisher or a studio.
