Wizard Name Generator D&D

D&D wizard names carry an unusual amount of history because so many spells are named after wizards. Bigby's Hand, Tenser's Floating Disk, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, Leomund's Tiny Hut, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, Melf's Acid Arrow and Tasha's Hideous Laughter all began as Gary Gygax's Greyhawk player characters (Drawmij is Jim Ward backwards, and Melf is a male elf), and Forgotten Realms added Elminster Aumar, Khelben Blackstaff Arunsun, the Simbul, Szass Tam and Halaster Blackcloak. Those names set the tone: short, slightly odd, easy to shout across a table, and often paired with a title, a place or a household name.

Because wizards can be any race, the best name follows the character's ancestry first and the class second. Human wizards in the Realms use regional names, from Chondathan (Aldric, Corvin) to Turami and Calishite; high elves use the flowing Player's Handbook style with family names such as Liadon, Galanodel and Amakiir; rock gnomes wear playful names like Boddynock Nackle or Ellywick Beren; dwarves keep clan names such as Battlehammer and Fireforge; and tieflings choose Infernal names (Akmenos, Bryseis) or virtue names (Reverence, Sorrow). Layer the arcane on top with a school epithet (the Evoker, the Diviner, the Bladesinger), an affiliation (of Candlekeep, of the Red Wizards, of Blackstaff Tower) or a scholarly surname built from books, candles and towers.

The list above mixes canon archmages, Player's Handbook-style names by race and original wizardly surnames, so you can find something that fits a starting apprentice in Baldur's Gate 3 as easily as a lich in a homebrew campaign.
