D&D Gnome Name Generator

Gnome names in Dungeons & Dragons follow a convention set out in the Player's Handbook: every gnome has a given name, a clan name and, usually, one or more nicknames. Gnomes love names so much that they collect them, and by middle age a gnome might answer to half a dozen. Given names are bright and bouncy, often with doubled letters and playful endings: Boddynock, Ellywick, Namfoodle, Waywocket, Zook. Clan names are shorter and plainer, sometimes almost human-sounding: Beren, Daergel, Folkor, Nackle, Scheppen, Turen. Nicknames are earned and descriptive, like Badger, Nim, Sparklegem or Buttons.

The three main 5e subraces each nudge the style. Rock gnomes, the tinkerers, attract surnames built from workshop words such as Cogsworth, Sparkwhisker and Brassbuckle. Forest gnomes, who live among woodland animals, prefer names like Foxburrow, Acornhollow and Mushroomcap. Deep gnomes, the svirfneblin of the Underdark, take earthier and gloomier names like Gloomstone, Blackpick and Deepdelve. Fizban the Fabulous from Dragonlance and Nackle from Baldur's Gate 3 are good reminders that gnome names can be silly on the surface and still belong to serious characters.
