About wizards names
Wizard names in fantasy descend from a handful of real traditions, and knowing them makes it much easier to invent a good one. The oldest layer is mythic and single-worded: Merlin (from the Welsh Myrddin), Taliesin and Gwydion from Celtic legend, Vainamoinen from the Kalevala, Circe and Medea from Greek myth. Tolkien added the Norse-flavoured Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast, and later authors gave us Belgarath, Allanon, Elminster and Rincewind, all short, distinctive and easy to say. A one-word name suits a wizard so old or so famous that no surname is needed.
The second layer comes from the real history of magic and learning: Agrippa, Paracelsus, Nostradamus, Zosimos, Faust, Hermes Trismegistus. Latinised scholar names in this vein (Ambrosius, Cornelius, Erasmus, Nicodemus, Theodoric) paired with a bookish surname such as Inkwell, Vellmoor, Greymantle or Nightlantern instantly say wizard without a single reference to fire or shadow. The third layer is the title or epithet: Gandalf the Grey, Ravel the Red, Anselm the Learned, Ferrand of the Nine Candles. Colours, virtues and places all work, and the epithet often does more characterisation than the name.
Not every wizard is an archmage. Hedge wizards, village cunning folk and wandering conjurers wear plain names with a hint of the countryside: Old Tobin, Mother Hollis, Hob of the Crossroads, Peg Thistlewick. Mixing all four styles across a cast gives you a believable range from court magician to marsh witch, and the list above is organised so you can pull from whichever register your story needs.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide the wizard's status first: a single ancient name (Alatar) for a legend, Latin name plus scholarly surname (Cornelius Ashwold) for a learned mage, and a homely name (Goodman Fenn) for a hedge wizard.
- Colour epithets carry meaning in fantasy, so use them deliberately: the Grey for a wanderer, the White for a leader or healer, the Black for a feared or misunderstood one, the Red for a warlike or fiery mage.
- Avoid stacking on-the-nose magic words such as Spellcaster, Magicweaver or Mysticmage as surnames; real-sounding surnames built from books, candles, birds and weather age much better.
- Match the culture of your setting: Celtic-sounding names (Cadoc, Rhosyn, Anwen) for a misty island kingdom, Norse (Ansgar, Sigrun) for the far north, Arabic or Persian (Ibn Sahl, Iskander) for a desert city of astrologers.
- Say the full name in dialogue before you commit; a wizard gets addressed constantly, so a name that shortens well (Ambrosius to Ambrose) is a practical advantage.
Frequently asked questions
What are some famous wizard names?
The best-known are Merlin, Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Prospero, Faust, Circe, Medea, Baba Yaga, Morgan le Fay, Ged (Sparrowhawk), Raistlin Majere, Elminster, Belgarath, Allanon, Rincewind and Kvothe, along with historical figures such as Agrippa, Paracelsus and Nostradamus.
What makes a wizard name sound good?
Age and learning. Latin or old European first names, surnames drawn from studies and towers rather than from fire and shadow, and a well-chosen epithet such as the Grey or of the Silent Tower all suggest a long life spent with books, which is what a wizard name needs to convey.
Are wizard, sorcerer and mage names different?
In most fiction wizards learn magic from study, so their names skew scholarly and archaic. Sorcerers, whose magic is inborn, and mages, a broader term, tolerate more exotic or elemental names. If you are writing D&D, wizard names lean bookish while sorcerer names lean dramatic.
Can I use these names in a published book or game?
The original names are free to use commercially. Names from myth, legend and history (Merlin, Circe, Paracelsus) are public domain, but characters from modern fiction such as Gandalf, Rincewind or Elminster are protected and belong only in fan works.
