About kobold clan names

Kobold clans take their names from the three things a kobold cares about: the dragon they serve, the hole they live in, and the traps they build. In D&D lore a warren is one extended family ruled by its eldest sorcerer or a dragon's chosen overseer, so clan names tend to be devotional (Servants of Ashardalon, Brood of the Red Mother) or tied to a landmark the tribe has dug under (Gullet Pass Warren, Sunken Mill Clan). Kobolds name places for how they look from knee height, which is why so many clans are Low, Under, Deep or Hollow something.

The second convention is the two-word compound borrowed from their dragon overlords: Sunscale, Deepfang, Rustclaw, Embersnout. These work like dwarf clan names but swap stone and metal for scale, fang, tail, egg and vent. Kobolds who speak Draconic natively may use a clan word in that tongue (Clan Ixenvaar, Thurkear Warren); a sharp, hissing name full of k, x, z and double s instantly reads as kobold.

Finally, outsiders and kobolds alike use descriptive titles: the Yipping Hundred, the Trap-Setters of Gullet Pass, the Egg-Turners. How to choose kobold clan names

  • Decide who the clan answers to first: if they serve a dragon, name them after it (Brood of Vyrrakoth, Scales of the Copper King); if they're masterless, use a place or trade name instead.
  • Use the clan name to telegraph the dungeon. A party that hears 'Pitspike Tribe' or 'the Rope-Cutters' should expect traps, while 'Egg-Watchers of Mount Hissing' hints at a hatchery to protect or raid.
  • For a Draconic-sounding clan, build on real Draconic roots (ixen for fire, thurkear for lair, darastrix for dragon) and keep the word short and spiky.
  • Give rival clans in one cave system related names (Upper Warren, Lower Warren, Thirteenth Warren) so players can track kobold politics without a map.
  • Let the clan name evolve in play: a warren that loses its dragon might become 'the Dragon's Leftovers', which is both funny and a plot hook.

What makes a name sound like a kobold clan rather than a dragonborn clan?

Dragonborn clan names are long, proud and Draconic (Clethtinthiallor, Kerrhylon). Kobold clans are shorter, scrappier and often self-deprecating or literal: Rustclaw Tribe, the Yipping Hundred, Burrow of the Bent Nail. If the name sounds like it was made up by something small living under a floor, it's kobold.

Yes. Pick a clan name for your character's origin and use it as a surname or epithet, for example Meepo of the Sunscale Clan or Zik Deepfang. The warren's name also tells the DM what kind of home your kobold left behind.

Do kobold clans in Pathfinder work the same way?

Mostly. Pathfinder kobolds also organize by tribe and dragon patron, and tribes are commonly named after their scale color or a local feature (Sewer Dragons, Redscale, Cinderclaw). The names here fit either system with no changes.
