Generate villain names with real menace: comic-book codenames, sinister aliases like The Hollow Man, aristocratic tyrants, mad doctors, crime bosses and fantasy antagonists, all ready for your story, campaign, screenplay or game.

About villain names

The best villain names do one of three jobs. Some describe a method or a gimmick so the audience knows what to fear before the character acts: the Riddler, the Puppeteer, the Locksmith. Some borrow respectability and twist it, which is why so many villains are Doctors, Barons, Countesses and Reverends; a title implies the character was trusted once. And some are plain, ordinary human names (Hannibal Lecter, Anton Chigurh, Hans Gruber) that become frightening only through what the character does, which is often the scariest option in realistic fiction.

This generator mixes all three. You will find comic-book codenames (Razorwire, Blackfrost, Nightjar), definite-article aliases that sound like tabloid headlines (The Hollow Man, The Saint of Knives, The Butcher of Hollowbrook), titled aristocrats and clergy (Baron von Krieg, Abbess Cinder), and full civilian names with a cold edge (Malachi Crane, Lavinia Mordaunt). The sound matters: hard k, v and z consonants, clipped single syllables and words associated with cold, rot, iron and night all read as threatening.

Match the name to the genre. A masked supervillain wants a codename, a noir crime lord wants a surname and a nickname, a fantasy tyrant wants a title and an epithet. Many villains here work with more than one, so feel free to combine a civilian name with an alias.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give the villain a name that hints at their method, not their alignment. "The Taxidermist" promises a specific horror; "Evilman" promises nothing.
  • Pair a civilian name with an alias. Dr. Lucretia Hale by day and The Fever Doctor in the headlines gives you two registers to write in and a reveal to play with.
  • Keep it shorter than the hero's name. Villains are remembered by a punchy one or two syllables (Bane, Venom, Gruber), which is also easier for other characters to whisper.
  • Borrow a respectable title when you want the villain to feel like a corruption of authority: Reverend, Professor, Baroness, Commissioner, Headmistress.
  • Read the name next to your hero's. If both start with the same sound or share a structure, change one; the contrast between Peter Parker and Norman Osborn is part of why the rivalry works.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a villain name based on powers?

Name the effect, not the power. A villain who controls ice becomes Frostbite, Coldsnap or Glacier; one who manipulates people becomes The Puppeteer or The Marionette. Pick the most unsettling consequence of the power and use a concrete, physical word for it.

Should a villain name start with "The"?

Use "The" when the name is a role or a reputation (The Locksmith, The Hollow Man) that other characters would use to refer to someone they fear or do not fully know. Drop it for codenames that function as a proper name, like Hemlock or Razorwire.

Can I use these villain names in a published comic, novel or game?

Yes. All the names here are original and free to use commercially. We have deliberately left out established trademarked villains such as Joker, Thanos or Voldemort, so you will not be borrowing from an existing franchise.

What makes a villain name sound evil?

Hard consonants (k, v, z, gr), short syllables that end abruptly, and vocabulary tied to cold, decay, iron, night and sharp objects. Aristocratic or clerical titles add a second layer: they imply power that has been misused.
