Cold, blunt villain aliases in the My Hero Academia style

About MHA villain names
Villains in My Hero Academia are named very differently from heroes. Where Class 1-A picks loud, brandable aliases like Red Riot or Chargebolt, Kohei Horikoshi gives his villains a single cold noun: Overhaul, Stain, Twice, Dabi, Ending, Slice, Mummy. The word usually describes what the villain does to a body, a building or society, and it is never heroic. Even the Meta Liberation Army lieutenants follow the rule with Trumpet, Skeptic and Curious, and the Shie Hassaikai stick to clinical labels like Chronostasis and Mimic.
Underneath the alias sits a civilian name that hides the Quirk in its kanji, exactly as with heroes. Shigaraki Tomura reads as dead-hand mourning, Toga Himiko contains blood and ember, Chisaki Kai is written with crushing and loosening, and Dabi is simply the word for cremation. This list reproduces both layers: canon villains with their real names, plus original aliases (Rupture, Gridlock, Nullify, Kurayami, Gashadokuro) and Japanese full names built on dark roots like kuro, yami, doku, oni and sabi for OCs.
Use it for fan fiction antagonists, roleplay, a Quirk-based tabletop campaign or a fresh League roster. Pair a bare-noun alias with a Quirk-pun civilian name and the result reads like it came out of the manga.
How to choose MHA villain names
- Pick the Quirk first and name the damage it does: a decay Quirk gives you Rot or Atrophy, a restraint Quirk gives you Chokehold or Shackle, a copy Quirk gives you Thrice or Replica.
- Keep the alias to one word or two short ones. Overhaul, Stain and Muscular all land in three syllables or fewer; anything longer starts to sound like a hero name.
- For a civilian name, hide the Quirk in the surname with a dark root such as Kuro (black), Yami (darkness), Doku (poison), Oni (demon) or Sabi (rust), then give the character an ordinary first name like Reiji or Akane.
- Japanese folklore terms like Gashadokuro, Jorogumo and Kamaitachi make great aliases for Nomu-style or monstrous villains and fit Horikoshi's fondness for yokai imagery.
- Reserve mock-polite titles (Gentle Criminal, Mr. Compress, Madam Mortar) for theatrical villains; the Vanguard Action Squad types should sound like a diagnosis, not a stage act.
Frequently asked questions
How are MHA villain names different from hero names?
Hero names are brands meant to be cheered: punny, upbeat and often English-flavored (Uravity, Froppy, Dynamight). Villain names are single blunt nouns that describe harm or decay, like Overhaul, Stain, Twice, Ending and Slice. The generator follows that register, so expect short, unsettling words rather than anything triumphant.
Which canon My Hero Academia villains are included?
The list covers the League of Villains (Shigaraki, Dabi, Toga, Twice, Mr. Compress, Spinner, Magne, Kurogiri), the Vanguard Action Squad (Muscular, Moonfish, Mustard), the Shie Hassaikai (Overhaul, Chronostasis, Mimic, the Eight Bullets), the Meta Liberation Army (Re-Destro, Trumpet, Skeptic, Curious, Geten), All For One, Gigantomachia, Stain, Gentle Criminal, La Brava, Lady Nagant, the movie villains Nine, Wolfram and Flect Turn, and the major Nomu.
How do I make a civilian name for an MHA villain OC?
Horikoshi hides the Quirk in the kanji of the family name. Use a dark or Quirk-related root as the surname stem (Kurobane for a black-wing Quirk, Hebigawa for a snake Quirk, Dokuhara for poison) and pair it with a normal Japanese given name. The generator's full names like Reiji Sabishiro and Akane Chishiro are built this way.
Can I use these villain names in fan fiction or a tabletop game?
Yes. Canon names belong to their characters and to the series, but the original aliases and civilian names are free to use for OCs, roleplay, non-commercial fan work and Quirk-themed RPG campaigns.
