Anime villains are named to be remembered, and the genre has settled on a handful of reliable patterns. The first is the single name: Frieza, Cell, Griffith, Sukuna, Meruem, Makima. Dropping the surname signals that the character stands outside ordinary society, and the name itself is usually two or three syllables with a hard consonant or a hiss. The second pattern is the Japanese full name with ominous kanji, where the surname carries the threat: Kibutsuji, Shigaraki, Kiryuin, Kurokawa. Dark (kuro), snake (hebi), demon (oni) and shadow (kage) are the common building blocks, paired with a calm, even elegant given name.

The third pattern is Western and aristocratic. Dio Brando, Johan Liebert, Sosuke Aizen's European-flavored Espada, Charles zi Britannia and Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti all borrow the sound of old money, wine labels and Latin scripture. Shonen and isekai overlords go bigger again with titled demon kings, while psychological series prefer the blank threat of a codename or number: Zero, Subject Thirteen, Kira. A final, smaller group is the epithet, a trade or object used as a name, like Overhaul, Stain, the Gun Devil or The Puppeteer.

Pick the pattern that matches the villain's role. A final boss wants a single name or a grand title; a mastermind wants a polished full name; a monster-of-the-arc wants an epithet.
