A list of 1,000 Anglo-Saxon kingdom, sub-kingdom and folk names, from recorded forms such as West Seaxe, Mierce and Hwicce to new names built from the same Old English elements, like Stanseaxe, Wealdsæte, Fenware and Eastmearc.

About Anglo-Saxon kingdom names

Early England was a patchwork of kingdoms, sub-kingdoms and peoples, and most of their names say who lived there, not where the border ran. West Seaxe is the West Saxons, East Engle the East Angles and Mierce the border folk. Other peoples were named as dwellers of a place with -sæte or -ware (Pecsæte, the Peak dwellers; Cantware, the Kent dwellers) or as the followers of a leader with -ingas. A realm as such is a rice, a land or a mearc, a march or border.

About 90 entries are recorded names, in Old English or in their modern form: the seven kingdoms later called the Heptarchy (Wessex, Sussex, Essex, Kent, East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria), plus Bernicia, Deira, Lindsey, the Hwicce, the Magonsæte, the Wihtware of Wight and smaller peoples such as the Gyrwe and Tomsæte. All the others are new names built from the same elements, such as Stanseaxe, Wealdsæte, Fenware, Hreodingas and Eastmearc. A built name is never offered as a recorded one.

Spelling follows Old English: æ is kept and th stands for þ and ð. Phrases such as Miercna Rice, kingdom of the Mercians, put the people in the genitive plural: -sætna, -wara, -inga, Seaxna, Engla. Modernized forms like Westmark, Aldermere and Fenset are there for maps that need plain letters.

How to choose Anglo-Saxon kingdom names

  • Name the people first and the land second: a kingdom of the Fenware or the Wealdsæte reads as more Anglo-Saxon than a realm named for its borders.
  • Match the ending to the size: -rice or Cynerice for a full kingdom, -sæte, -ware and -ingas for a sub-kingdom or tributary people, and -mearc for a frontier.
  • Build a believable map from one stem: Seaxe or Engle with compass prefixes (North Seaxe, Suth Engle) gives sister kingdoms that look related.
  • For a phrase of your own, put the people in the genitive plural before the noun: Fenware becomes Fenwara Rice and Hreodingas becomes Hreodinga Rice.
  • Write æ as ae (Wealdsaete) if your font, game engine or keyboard cannot handle the letter; readers will still know it as Old English.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Anglo-Saxon kingdoms?

About 90 of the 1,000 are recorded: West Seaxe (Wessex), Mierce (Mercia), East Engle (East Anglia), Northhymbre (Northumbria), Dere, Beornice, Hwicce and peoples such as the Magonsæte and Wihtware. The rest, such as Stanseaxe, Wealdsæte and Fenware, are new names built from real Old English elements. Many are set on a real river, hill or forest, as in The Cotswold Dwellers or The Wear Angles: the place is real and the people-name is new. Because the elements are few, a built compound can happen to match a people or district named in an old charter, so look a name up before you treat it as invented.

What do -sæte, -ware and -ingas mean?

All three make the name of a people. Sæte and ware both mean dwellers, so the Wealdsæte are forest dwellers and the Fenware fen dwellers, while -ingas names the followers or kin of a leader, as in Leofingas, Leofa's people. The ending -sæte survives in the county names Somerset and Dorset.

What is the difference between a kingdom, a sub-kingdom and a people in this list?

Old English used a people's name for its territory, so one word can serve for both. As a rule of thumb for fiction, the compass names in Seaxe, Engle and Mierce and the names in -rice suit a kingdom with its own king, and the -sæte, -ware and -ingas names suit a smaller people under an overlord. Formal entries such as Cynerice of Suthmierce or Sub-Kingdom of the Hyllsæte spell the rank out.

How do you pronounce names like Mierce and Hwicce?

Æ sounds like the a in cat and sc like sh. C before e or i is usually ch, so Mierce is roughly MEER-cheh and Hwicce roughly HWITCH-eh, while Seaxe is close to SAX-eh. The stress falls on the first syllable.
