Medieval Kingdom Name Generator

Real medieval kingdoms were named after peoples (Wessex, the West Saxons; Mercia, the border folk), landscapes (Northumbria, the land north of the Humber), or the tribe's founding lord. That is why the most convincing invented kingdom names use the same building blocks: a descriptive root plus a land or settlement suffix. English-style suffixes include -mark (borderland), -march, -moor, -mere, -ford, -wick, and -holm; Germanic ones include -reich, -gard, -stein, and -wald; Nordic ones -vik, -heim, and -land; and Latinate ones -ia, -oria, and -avia, which give a kingdom a Roman or Church-Latin gravity, as in Valdoria or Aurellia.

The title matters as much as the name. In the Middle Ages, a Kingdom outranked a Grand Duchy, which outranked a Duchy, County, March, or Barony, and many realms were called by their landscape (the Riverlands, the Westmarch) rather than a proper noun. Mixing ranks across your map makes it feel politically real: one Kingdom of Aldermark surrounded by the Duchy of Bramwald and the Free County of Fallowmarch tells a story of vassals and rivals.

When choosing, decide which real-world culture your kingdom echoes, keep every place-name in that realm in the same linguistic family, and use the long form (Kingdom of Estermere) on maps and the short form (Estermere) in dialogue.
