House Velaryon is the other great Valyrian family of Westeros, older in the realm than the Targaryens and tied to the sea rather than the sky. Their names use the same Old Valyrian sound palette as their cousins, long vowel pairs such as ae and ai, endings in -ys, -or, -on and -mond, but with a slightly harder, saltier edge: Corlys, Laenor, Vaemond, Daemon, Malentine, Rhogar, Monford. Women take the soft -a and -ys endings of Laena, Daenaera, Valaena and Alyssa. Because the two houses intermarried for generations, Targaryen favorites like Jacaerys, Lucerys and Rhaenys show up on Velaryon family trees too.

The house also has a rich tradition of lowborn and bastard names. Velaryon bastards from the Crownlands carry the surname Waters (Aurane Waters), while shipwrights and sailors of the port towns are known by place alone: Addam of Hull, Alyn of Hull, Marilda of Hull. Lords earn epithets from the sea, most famously Corlys the Sea Snake and Alyn Oakenfist, and their ships (Sea Snake, Ice Wolf, Summer Maid, Lady Baela) are named like members of the family.
