George R. R. Martin built Westerosi names by nudging familiar medieval English names a letter or two sideways: Eddard for Edward, Robb for Robert, Jaime for James, Petyr for Peter, Catelyn for Kathleen. Surnames belong to noble houses tied to a region: Stark and Umber in the North, Tully and Frey in the Riverlands, Tyrell and Hightower in the Reach, Lannister in the Westerlands, Arryn and Royce in the Vale.

Each region also has its own flavour. Northern first names are blunt (Cregan, Torrhen, Brandon, Rickard). Targaryens and Velaryons keep High Valyrian names full of ae and y (Aegon, Rhaenyra, Daemon, Corlys). Dornish names show Rhoynish influence (Doran, Arianne, Nymeria, Obara), and Ironborn favour hard, salt-worn names (Balon, Euron, Victarion, Dagmer). Bastards take a regional surname instead of a house name: Snow in the North, Sand in Dorne, Rivers in the Riverlands, Stone in the Vale, Waters in the Crownlands, Storm in the Stormlands, Hill in the Westerlands, Flowers in the Reach, and Pyke on the Iron Islands. Smallfolk, wildlings, and men of the Night's Watch often go by a single name or a nickname (Hot Pie, Ygritte, Tormund Giantsbane).

The names here pair region-appropriate given names with houses that hold those lands, plus bastard names and single-name characters, so a new lord, hedge knight, or raider fits the map immediately.
