Name a bowtruckle, the tiny twig-like tree guardian of the Wizarding World, with 1,000 small, green and woody names such as Twiglet, Catkin, Splinter, Lockpick and Sir Twigsalot. For fan fiction, roleplay, games and toy bowtruckles.

About bowtruckle names

A bowtruckle is the Wizarding World's smallest bodyguard: a creature at most eight inches tall that looks like a bundle of twigs and bark with two small brown eyes, and that lives in trees whose wood is good enough for wands. It is shy and peaceable until its tree is threatened, and then the long, sharp fingers come out. In the Fantastic Beasts films Newt Scamander carries one called Pickett in his pocket, a clingy little lock-picker, and calls the others in his case Titus, Finn, Poppy, Marlow and Tom.

Those six are the only canon bowtruckle names here, and they set the tone: plain, old-fashioned human names for something that could hide behind a pencil. Beside them are twig, stick and bark words (Twiglet, Splinter, Kindling), trees named simply as trees (Hazel, Yew, Alder, Elder), buds and seeds (Catkin, Sprig), forest-floor names, tiny and thin words (Titch, Matchstick), lock-picking names (Lockpick, Nimblefingers), temperaments (Bashful, Limpet, Spitfire), Latin and botanical names (Quercus, Ramulus), British garden and hedgerow words (Bramble, Trug), woodworking terms and mock titles such as Sir Twigsalot.

The groups are mixed rather than sorted, so each batch offers several directions at once. Nothing here is grand or monstrous: a bowtruckle is a pocket-sized pet, so the names stay small enough to say in a whisper.

How to choose bowtruckle names

  • Start with what your bowtruckle is like. A shy one suits Bashful, Hush or Peekaboo; a clinger suits Limpet, Stickfast or Tagalong; one with a temper suits Spitfire, Prickle or Thorn.
  • For the canon feel, pick a plain human name. Pickett, Titus, Finn, Poppy, Marlow and Tom are all short and old-fashioned, so Ned, Cecil, Hattie or Bessie sit beside them naturally.
  • Name it after its home tree. Hazel, Rowan, Yew and Alder work as they are, and the Latin genus gives a grander version for a character sheet: Corylus for hazel, Quercus for oak, Salix for willow.
  • Keep it short if the name will be said often in a story or at the table. One or two syllables (Sprig, Twig, Catkin, Wicket) read as small; save Sir Twigsalot or Warden of the Wand Tree for a joke or a full formal name.
  • For a branch of several bowtruckles, draw from one group so they sound like a set: Bud, Sprout and Seedling, or Latch, Hasp and Hinge.

Frequently asked questions

What are the canon bowtruckle names?

Pickett is the bowtruckle Newt Scamander keeps in his pocket in the Fantastic Beasts films. In the first film he also calls the others in his case by name: Titus, Finn, Poppy, Marlow and Tom. Those six are on this list; every other name here is an ordinary word, a plain name or a playful coinage in the same small spirit, not a bowtruckle name from the films or books.

What kind of name suits a bowtruckle?

Something small, green and woody. Twig and bark words (Twiglet, Splinter), tree names (Hazel, Rowan), buds and seeds (Catkin, Sprig) and tiny words (Titch, Peewee) all fit a creature that looks like a walking stem. Plain human names work too, because that is how the films name them.

Why are there lock-picking names on the list?

Because Pickett picks locks in the Fantastic Beasts films. Lockpick, Picklock, Latchkey, Jimmy and Nimblefingers all play on that talent.

Can I use these names for a toy, a pet or a story character?

Yes. They are plain words and names, so they suit a toy bowtruckle, a companion in roleplay or fan fiction, or a real pet that is thin, green or clingy, such as a stick insect or a gecko. Stick Insect and Mantis are even on the list.
