Targaryen Dragon Name Generator

Targaryen dragons carry names from two traditions. The oldest and grandest are High Valyrian names given by their riders: Balerion the Black Dread, Vhagar and Meraxes were named for the gods of old Valyria, and later dragons kept the same sound with hard consonants and endings in -ax, -axes, -ys, -yx, -ion or -or (Caraxes, Syrax, Vermax, Arrax, Meleys, Tessarion, Vermithor). Daenerys followed the same pattern when she named Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion after Drogo, Rhaegar and Viserys, showing that a Valyrian dragon name can honor a person too.

The second tradition is Westerosi. Dragons hatched at Dragonstone were often given plain-spoken common tongue names that describe their color or manner: Silverwing, Dreamfyre, Sunfyre, Seasmoke, Moondancer, Stormcloud, Morning. The wild dragons and Dragonseed mounts of the Dance got rougher nicknames from the smallfolk: Sheepstealer, Cannibal, Grey Ghost. The archaic spelling fyre and the -wing, -dancer and -smoke endings are what make these feel like Westeros rather than generic fantasy.

The names here mix canon dragons with new names built on both patterns, so you can pick a Valyrian name for a princess's hatchling, a nickname for a wild dragon on the Dragonmont, or a Common Tongue name for a Targaryen who has been raised in the Red Keep.
