Generate dragon names in the style of Balerion, Vhagar, Caraxes, and Syrax – High Valyrian-sounding names with the -ax, -yx, -es, and -ion endings the Targaryens favored, plus Westerosi common-tongue names like Sunfyre and Silverwing.

About valyrian dragon names

Targaryen dragons are named in two distinct traditions. The oldest and grandest carry High Valyrian names ending in -ion, -ax, -es, or -yx: Balerion, Vhagar, Meraxes, Caraxes, Syrax, Vermithor, Tessarion, Arrax, Tyraxes. Many are named for the gods of Old Valyria – Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar were all deities of the Freehold – so the sound is heavy, sonorous, and vaguely Greco-Roman, with hard consonants and long vowels. Daenerys continued the pattern by naming her three for the men in her life: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

The second tradition is the Common Tongue name, given especially by younger riders and Westerosi-born Targaryens: Sunfyre, Silverwing, Dreamfyre, Seasmoke, Moondancer, Stormcloud, Grey Ghost, and Sheepstealer. These describe the dragon's color or temperament, often with the archaic -fyre spelling. Wild or unclaimed dragons tend to earn nicknames like The Cannibal or, in Balerion's case, the Black Dread.

This list mixes every canon dragon from the books and shows with new names built the same way – Valyrian roots like zaldrīzes (dragon), perzys (fire), zōbrie (dark), and vezof (sun) reshaped with the classic endings, alongside fresh common-tongue names in the Silverwing mould.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the era: Conquest-era and Dance-era dragons almost always have Valyrian names, while later hatchlings and Westerosi riders lean toward common-tongue names like Sunfyre.
  • Pick a name that suits size and age – short, hard names (Vhagar, Arrax) for young dragons, and rolling three-syllable names (Vermithor, Tessarion) for ancient ones.
  • Use the -fyre spelling instead of -fire for common-tongue names; it instantly signals Westeros.
  • If your dragon is honoring a person, follow Daenerys's model and Valyrianize a name with -on or -ion (Drogo becomes Drogon).
  • Give wild or riderless dragons a title-style nickname (the Cannibal, the Grey Ghost) rather than a formal name.

Frequently asked questions

How are Targaryen dragons named?

Older dragons bear High Valyrian names, often after Valyrian gods (Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar) or family members (Drogon, Viserion), while others carry descriptive Common Tongue names like Sunfyre, Silverwing, and Seasmoke.

What endings sound most Valyrian for a dragon name?

The canon set relies on -ax/-axes (Syrax, Meraxes, Tyraxes), -ion (Balerion, Viserion, Tessarion), -yx, -ys, and -or (Vermithor). Pair one of those with a hard consonant like V, R, or X and it will sound at home in Old Valyria.

Are these names from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon canon?

The first thirty or so are canon dragons from the books, Game of Thrones, and House of the Dragon; the rest are original names built to match Valyrian and Westerosi naming conventions.

Can I use these dragon names in my own fantasy story?

The original names are free to use in fiction, games, and roleplay. Canon dragon names belong to George R. R. Martin's world, so use them for fan works rather than commercial original settings.
