Generate Great House names that belong in Frank Herbert's Imperium: canon Houses like Atreides, Harkonnen, Corrino and Ecaz alongside hundreds of original Landsraad houses with the same Greek, Latin, Finnic, Japanese, Persian and Norse roots. Built for Dune fan fiction, Dune: Imperium and Dune: Adventures in the Imperium campaigns, and sci-fi worldbuilding.

About Dune house names

The Great Houses of Dune are feudal dynasties that rule whole planets under the Padishah Emperor, so their names have to sound old, inherited and slightly foreign. Frank Herbert built them from real Earth languages picked for their associations: Atreides comes from the Greek Atreus, giving the family a tragic, Homeric weight; Harkonnen is Finnic and harsh; Corrino, Vernius and Venport are Latinate, suggesting imperial Rome; Moritani is Japanese, Ordos Mongol, Fenring and Thorvald Germanic and Norse; Ecaz and Richese read as vaguely French. Minor houses in the Landsraad follow the same logic, from Ginaz and Hagal to Metulli, Taligari, Novebruns and Wydras.

A convincing original House name is usually two or three syllables, ends in a clean consonant or a Latin -us/-o/-is, and could plausibly be a surname somewhere on old Earth twenty thousand years ago. It is written as House plus the name, and a Great House is often tied to its fief: House Atreides of Caladan, House Harkonnen of Giedi Prime, House Corrino of Kaitain. This generator mixes canon houses from the novels, the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson prequels and the games with original names in each of Herbert's source languages, so your invented house sits naturally beside the famous ones in fan fiction, a Dune: Imperium table or a tabletop campaign.

How to choose Dune house names

  • Match the language root to the House's character: Greek or Latin for ancient prestige, Finnic or Slavic for blunt menace, Japanese or Persian for formal, ritual-bound courts.
  • Attach a homeworld (House Tolvane of Chusuk) when you introduce the House; Herbert's fiefs like Caladan, Giedi Prime, Kaitain, Grumman, Ecaz and Richese are used interchangeably with the family name.
  • Avoid names that rhyme with the big three. Anything ending in -eides, -onnen or -ino will read as a knockoff of Atreides, Harkonnen or Corrino.
  • Give the House a single defining trade or sin, the way Richese has machines, Ix has technology and Harkonnen has cruelty; a name attached to a reputation is easier to remember than a list of titles.
  • Keep Minor Houses shorter and plainer than Great Houses. Herbert's minor houses (Sor, Kalt, Plana, Maros) are often one or two syllables, which makes the Great Houses sound grander by contrast.

Frequently asked questions

Which Dune houses are actually canon?

From Frank Herbert's novels and appendices: Atreides, Harkonnen, Corrino, Ecaz, Richese, Moritani, Fenring, Ginaz, Hagal, Kenric, Metulli, Mutelli, Novebruns, Tantor, Taligari, Teranos, Varota, Wallach and others. Ordos comes from the Dune Encyclopedia and the strategy games, while Vernius, Thorvald, Butler, Venport, Bludd and Ginjo appear in the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson prequels. Everything else in this list is original.

Why do Dune house names sound like they come from so many different languages?

Herbert imagined humanity's noble families as survivors of many Earth cultures, scattered across the Imperium over ten thousand years after the Butlerian Jihad. Greek, Latin, Finnish, Japanese, Mongol and Norse names coexist because the Landsraad is a melting pot of ancient lineages rather than one culture.

Should my Dune house name include the planet?

It is optional. Characters in the books usually say just the family name, but formal and written contexts use House Atreides of Caladan. Pick a homeworld from Herbert's planets (Poritrin, Chusuk, Gamont, Lankiveil, Bela Tegeuse) or invent one, and use the long form for introductions and the short form in dialogue.

Can I use these names for Dune: Imperium or a tabletop RPG?

Yes. Dune: Adventures in the Imperium expects players to create their own Minor House, and Dune: Imperium tables often give homebrew leaders a House. Choose a name whose language root matches the culture you want, add a homeworld and a trade, and it will fit alongside the canon houses.
