Sailing ship names from the Age of Sail follow conventions that varied by nation and by trade. Royal Navy ships of the line took names from classical mythology (Bellerophon, Agamemnon, Temeraire) or bold adjectives (Indefatigable, Implacable, Audacious), while frigates and sloops leaned toward goddesses, birds, and small fierce animals (Naiad, Sparrowhawk, Rattlesnake).
