About game of thrones house names

Noble houses in A Song of Ice and Fire are named the way English gentry families were: after a place, a feature of the land, an ancestor's nickname or an old trade. Stark, Bolton, Karstark and Umber are blunt Northern names of one or two syllables. Reach and Riverlands houses like Tyrell, Fossoway, Mallister and Butterwell sound softer and more Norman-French. Dornish houses (Martell, Dayne, Yronwood, Qorgyle) carry Rhoynish flavour, the Iron Islands favour hard consonants (Greyjoy, Drumm, Harlaw, Blacktyde), and Valyrian-descended houses like Targaryen, Velaryon and Celtigar have the only names in Westeros with three flowing syllables and Y-heavy spellings.

George R.R. Martin also builds compound houses from two plain words: Blackwood, Whitehill, Kettleblack, Goodbrother, Coldwater, Smallwood, Merryweather. That formula is the easiest way to invent a house that sounds like it has always been on the map. Pair a colour, metal or weather word with a landscape word, or take a real English surname that already looks medieval.

The list mixes the great houses with their seats, roughly a hundred real lesser houses from the books and House of the Dragon, and a set of invented houses built on the same patterns. Add a seat, sigil and words and you have a bannerman ready for a fan fiction, a Westeros roleplay or a tabletop campaign.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the region: short hard names for the North and Iron Islands, French-sounding names for the Reach, Y and ae spellings only for Valyrian blood.
  • Style it fully as 'House Name of Seat' the first time it appears (House Ashcombe of Larkhill) and then just the surname, exactly as the books do.
  • Give the house words and a sigil that hint at the name; a House Coldbrook with a frozen stream on a white field explains itself.
  • Bastards of your house take the regional surname (Snow, Rivers, Flowers, Sand, Storm, Waters, Hill, Pyke, Stone), which is a quick way to show where the family holds land.
  • For a fan fiction set in canon, use an invented house sworn to a real great house rather than rewriting the history of an existing one.

Frequently asked questions

How are Game of Thrones houses named?

Mostly after English-style surnames tied to place, land or an ancestor. Martin uses real medieval English family names (Tully, Bracken, Mooton), compound words (Blackwood, Coldwater), and Valyrian-sounding names with ae and y for the dragonlord families.

What are the great houses of Westeros?

At the start of the series they are Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Targaryen, Greyjoy, Tyrell, Martell, Arryn and Tully. Later Bolton and Frey briefly rise to lord paramountcy, and Hightower and Velaryon are among the most powerful houses that are not great houses.

Can I use these house names in my own story?

The invented houses are free to use in fan fiction, roleplay, tabletop games and original fantasy. Canon houses are HBO and George R.R. Martin's property and appear here for reference and inspiration.

What makes a house name sound Northern versus Southern?

Northern names are Old English and Norse-flavoured, one or two syllables with hard consonants (Stark, Umber, Wull, Karstark). Southern names, especially in the Reach and Crownlands, are longer and softer with French or Latin echoes (Tyrell, Fossoway, Rosby, Merryweather).
