Unit of Measurement Name Generator
Lived-in units for fantasy and sci-fi worlds
Unit names for worldbuilding: lengths, distances, weights, volumes, land areas and time spans such as Bowshot, Mule-Load, Candle-Inch, Ox-Day and Hearth-Kettle. Real historical units carry their origin in brackets, like Verst (Russian distance).
About unit of measurement names
Real units of measurement grew out of everyday life. A cubit is a forearm, a fathom is the reach of two outstretched arms, a furlong is the length of a furrow, and a hogshead is a cask. Invented units convince for the same reason: a Bowshot, a Mule-Load, a Hearth-Kettle, an Ox-Day of plowland or a Candle-Inch of time tells the reader how people in your world live and work.
This list holds 1,000 unit names of two separate kinds. Entries whose brackets start with a people, a place or a period (Russian, biblical, medieval, or simply old), such as Verst (Russian distance), Kilderkin (English ale cask) or Shekel (biblical weight), are real historical units. They come without conversion values, because most changed from region to region. Everything else was coined for worldbuilding: body lengths, travel distances, loads, vessels, field work and time spans, short units in dwarvish, elvish, desert and steppe styles, shipboard and soldier units for science fiction, and a small comic share. Brackets say what a unit measures where the name alone does not.
One caution: everyday objects became units all over the world, so a coined name here may match a local measure somewhere. Treat a name without an origin as fiction, not as proof that no such unit ever existed.
How to choose unit of measurement names
- Build a small system instead of one unit: pick a short length, a travel distance, a weight, a volume and a time span that could come from the same daily life, such as Knuckle, Day's March, Mule-Load, Stewpot and Candle-Inch.
- Let the unit show what the culture does. Herders count in Fleece and Cow-Summer, sailors in Day's Sail and Tide-Run, smiths in Forge-Shift.
- Keep units a little vague on purpose. Old measures differed between towns, so a character can grumble that a northern Stewpot holds less. Skip the conversion table unless the plot needs one.
- If you borrow a real unit, remember where it comes from: a Verst suggests Russia and a Koku suggests Japan, which may or may not suit an invented world.
- For science fiction, mix formal units named after people, like Veyra (drive output), with crew slang such as Hard Burn or Sarge-Minute.
Frequently asked questions
Are the units on this list real?
Some are. Entries whose brackets start with a people, a place or a period (including the plain word old), such as Furlong (English distance), Parasang (Persian distance) and Koku (Japanese rice volume), are real historical units. The rest were coined for fiction, though pots, loads and candles became units in so many places that a coined name may match a local one.
Why are there no conversion values?
Most old units never had a single value. They changed between regions, trades and centuries, so one number would mislead. In fiction it rarely matters: readers need to feel that a Day's Ride is far and a Thimble is small, not how many meters or milliliters each one is.
How do I invent a believable unit of measurement?
Start from something everyone in the culture handles: a body part, a tool, a container, a load an animal carries, or a job that takes a known time. Bowshot, Ox-Day and Mule-Load work because a reader pictures them at once. Then decide who sets the standard, if anyone, because quarrels over measures make good story detail.
What do the brackets after a name mean?
They say what the unit measures where the name does not make it plain, as in Kettle (ale) or Candle (time). On real units they give the origin first, as in Stone (English weight), and on the coined language-style units they give the style: dwarvish, elvish, desert or steppe.
