Generate element names for worldbuilding and magic systems: invented periodic-table substances like Aetherium and Obscurite, old alchemical names such as Aqua Regia and Brimstone, the words for fire, water, earth and air in Latin, Greek, Japanese and Sanskrit, and names for elemental spirits and elementally named characters.

About element names

Element names come in two traditions, and the word 'element' means something different in each. In the scientific tradition, an element is a substance on a periodic table, and real names follow a handful of patterns: a root plus -ium (helium, titanium), -on for noble gases (argon, xenon), -gen for the old 'producers' (hydrogen, oxygen) and -ine for halogens (chlorine, iodine). Roots come from gods (thorium, promethium), places (europium, polonium), colors in Greek (chromium, rhodium) and scientists. A fictional element sounds right when it borrows one of those patterns and a root with a story: Noctrium for a dark metal, Styxium for something from the underworld, Handwavium for a joke.

The older tradition is the classical and alchemical one: fire, water, earth, air and the fifth essence, plus the substances alchemists actually named, such as Aqua Regia, Brimstone, Quicksilver, Butter of Antimony and the Green Lion. Fantasy magic systems usually draw from here, often through Latin (Ignis, Glacies, Fulgur), Greek (Pyr, Hydor), Japanese (Kaze, Kaminari) or Sanskrit (Agni, Vayu, Akasha).

This list is grouped by use: invented elements and ores, real alchemical names, classical element words in several languages, elemental spirit names such as Pyrakos and Zephyrelle, and full character names with elemental surnames like Ingrid Stormholt, for writers and game designers who need a person named for a force.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a suffix that tells the reader what kind of thing it is: -ium for metals, -ite for ores and minerals, -on for gases and exotic energies, -gen for something that 'makes' another thing (Ignogen makes fire).
  • Give the root a story. Styxium, Erebite and Acheronite all sound underworldly because they borrow real mythic rivers; Kelvinite implies cold because of the temperature scale.
  • For a magic system, choose one source language and stay in it. Latin Ignis, Aqua, Terra and Aer feel like a set; mixing Ignis with Mizu and Vayu reads as random.
  • Decide how the element behaves before naming it. A volatile gas wants a short sharp name (Umbron, Nebulon); a heavy, stable ore wants more syllables (Halvorium, Tarvastine).
  • For characters, keep the given name realistic and put the element in the surname (Halvar Glacewick, Tamsin Squallcroft). It reads as a lineage rather than a costume.

Frequently asked questions

Does this generate real chemical elements or made-up ones?

Made-up ones, plus historical alchemical names. Entries like Aetherium, Obscurite and Vyrillium are fictional, while Aqua Regia, Quicksilver and Orpiment are real old names for chemical substances that work well as flavor in a fantasy setting. The 118 real periodic-table elements are not in the list.

Can I use these for a superhero or a magic power?

Yes. The classical-element words (Ignis, Pyr, Kaze, Agni) and the -kinesis entries suit powers, the spirit names (Pyrakos, Aquillon, Terranos, Zephyrelle) suit elemental beings, and the invented ores (Kryptonite-style substances such as Noctrium) suit a hero's weakness or power source.

How do I name a fictional element so it sounds scientific?

Use a Greek or Latin root plus a real-sounding ending, keep it to three or four syllables, and avoid doubled fantasy consonants. Dravidium, Kestrium and Pellucite pass as lab names; Zzarkonium does not.

What are the classical elements in other languages?

Latin: Ignis (fire), Aqua (water), Terra (earth), Aer (air), Aether. Greek: Pyr, Hydor, Gaia, Aer. Japanese: Hi, Mizu, Tsuchi, Kaze, with Ku for void. Sanskrit: Agni, Jala, Prithvi, Vayu, Akasha. Chinese wuxing uses Huo, Shui, Tu, Mu (wood) and Jin (metal).
