Fantasy Day Name Generator

A fantasy calendar needs two kinds of day names. The first are the ordinary weekdays, and real languages built those from only a few ideas: gods and planets (Thor's day, dies Veneris), plain counting (the Portuguese segunda-feira, the French Republican Primidi through Décadi) or what people did on them. The second are the named days that break the routine: feasts, fasts, vigils, eves and the one or two days a year that belong to no week at all. This list covers both.

For weekdays, compounds in -day do most of the work in English-flavoured settings (Hearthday, Tithesday, Wyrmsday), while Old English -dæg, German -tag, Latin dies and short invented words such as Aldain or Korrdeg give a calendar that sounds foreign without a glossary. Named days are where you can be specific and strange. The Day of Sealed Lips, the Fast of the Widow, the Night the Stars Fell or the Morrow of Oaths each imply a story, a ritual and a mood in a few words, and a saint's day (Saint Mabyn's Fast, Saint Cador's Day) hands you a whole local cult for free.

The best fantasy day names sit naturally in a sentence: 'we ride on Forgeday, after the Vigil of Ashes.' If a name cannot be spoken that casually, shorten it.
