Weekday Name Generator

Real weekday names were built from just two ideas, and a fictional week feels authentic when it borrows one of them. The Germanic week names days for gods and heavenly bodies: Sunday and Monday for the sun and moon, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for Tiw, Woden, Thor and Frigg, and Saturday for Saturn. Portuguese, Hebrew, Arabic and Chinese simply count them and reserve a name only for the holy day or market day. The French Revolutionary calendar went further and invented a ten-day week of Primidi through Decadi.

For worldbuilding, the god-day approach tells readers what the culture worships in a single word: a week of Vaelsday, Ormsday and Kethsday implies a pantheon before you describe it. Activity days (Marketday, Washday, Tithesday, Restday) tell readers how people live. Eberron-style single syllables such as Sul, Mol and Zol, or elvish names like Elenril and Silmaren, give a week that sounds foreign without needing translation. Decide how many days your week has, then pick one register and keep to it; a seven-day week that mixes Hearthday with Lunestre reads as an error unless two cultures are meant to be sharing a calendar.

Most fictional weeks end with a day that is different in kind, a rest day, holy day or market, so give the last day a name that stands apart.
