Generate currency names for fantasy kingdoms, sci-fi empires, tabletop campaigns, and video game economies. Names follow how real money is named: after metals, weights, rulers, and stamped symbols.
About currency names
Real currency names come from a handful of sources, and borrowing those patterns instantly makes a fictional currency feel plausible. Many are named for a weight of metal: pound, lira, livre, shekel, mark, talent, mina, and drachma all began as units of weight. Others name the metal itself, like the Polish złoty (golden), the Dutch guilder (golden), or the medieval florin and ducat. Some are named for the ruler or symbol stamped on the coin: the sovereign, the crown, the noble, the angel, the real (royal), the escudo (shield). Sci-fi tends to reach for abstract units, credits, and energy words such as credit, unit, cred, or the caps and casings of a scavenger economy.
Good fictional currencies usually come in a small system rather than a single name. A fantasy kingdom might trade in copper bits, silver marks, and gold crowns, with a rare platinum sovereign for lords and dragons. A cyberpunk city might run on Union Credits with grey-market ration chits underneath. When you pick names, choose one for each tier and make sure they sound like they belong to the same culture, whether that means Latin-flavored (Aurel, Argent, Ferrum), Germanic (Thaler, Groat, Kelmark), or invented soft syllables (Solin, Verin, Orin).
The list mixes historical coins, metal and animal names, weight-based names, and sci-fi credits so you can assemble a full economy for your world.
Tips for choosing a name
- Build a ladder, not a single coin: pick a low, mid, and high denomination (e.g. Copper Bit, Silver Mark, Gold Crown) so prices in your story feel concrete.
- Give the currency a nickname. Real people say bucks, quid, and loonies; a kingdom whose crowns are called "stags" because of the stamped deer feels lived-in.
- Match the name to the culture's language flavor: Latin roots (Aurum, Argent) for empires, short Germanic words (Groat, Mark) for northern kingdoms, abstract units (Credit, Quant) for sci-fi.
- Name coins after what is stamped on them (Sun, Raven, Dragon Scale) if you want a quick way to imply the nation's symbols and rulers.
- For post-apocalyptic settings, use scavenged objects as currency (Bottle Cap, Casing, Ration Chit); it tells the reader what is scarce.
Frequently asked questions
How are real currencies named?
Mostly after weights of metal (pound, lira, shekel, mark), the metal itself (guilder and złoty both mean golden), the image or ruler on the coin (sovereign, crown, real, escudo), or a place (the thaler is from Joachimsthal, which also gave us the word dollar). Copying one of these patterns makes a fictional currency feel real.
What are good fantasy currency names?
Classic choices are metal-and-shape names like Copper Bit, Silver Mark, and Gold Crown, historical coins like Ducat, Florin, and Groat, or symbol names like Stag, Raven, and Dragon Scale. Many settings use a three-tier system so a loaf of bread, a sword, and a castle can each be priced sensibly.
What do sci-fi settings usually call money?
Credits are the default (Star Wars, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk), often prefixed by the issuing power: Imperial Credit, Federation Credit, Union Credit. Alternatives include units, quants, and energy-based words like volts or cells. Post-apocalyptic worlds often use scavenged items such as bottle caps or shell casings.
Can I use these currency names in my game or novel?
Yes. Historical coin names like florin, ducat, and thaler are public domain, and the invented names here are free to use in any project, commercial or not.
