Generate names for tridents and three-pronged spears: mythic weapons of sea gods, cursed relics dredged from shipwrecks, merfolk heirlooms and loot-table legendaries for D&D, Pathfinder and fantasy fiction.
About trident names
The trident is the one weapon that comes with a god attached. Poseidon's trident raised storms and split rock, Shiva's trishula carries three points for creation, preservation and destruction, and the Roman retiarius fought with a fishing trident and a net. So trident names pull harder toward the sea, weather and divinity than sword names do. The best ones read like the weapon was dredged up rather than forged: Leviathan's Tooth, The Drowned Sceptre, Maelstrom's Tine.
A few structures do most of the work. One-word compounds built from ocean vocabulary (Tidebreaker, Saltspire, Wavecleaver) suit loot tables and quick reference. Possessive names tie the weapon to a creature or deity (Kraken's Reach, Nereid's Kiss, Net of Rán). Epithet names such as The Fork That Split the Moon or Three Graves for the Wicked sound like something a bard sang about, which works for an artifact with a history. Invented words in a merfolk or Atlantean register (Vaelorith, Shal'azir, Thalassar) are best for weapons that belong to a non-human culture, and short nicknames like Old Salt or Hush fit a veteran fisher-warrior better than anything grand.
This list mixes all of those, plus a few mythological borrowings, so you can pick the tone your setting needs: a holy relic for a sea cleric, a cursed prong for a drowned king, or a sailor's trusty gaff.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to how the trident was acquired: forged weapons take compound names like Stormsinger, while relics pulled from a wreck or a sea cave suit epithets like The Tooth Grandmother Sea Lost.
- Use the word trident sparingly in the name itself; sceptre, fork, tine, prong and spear all imply three points and keep the list from sounding repetitive.
- For D&D and Pathfinder, pair a name with a mechanic it suggests: Frostbrine for cold damage, Siren's Answer for a charm effect, Tidecaller for a water-control ability, Shipwrecker for bonus damage to objects or vehicles.
- If the wielder is a merfolk, triton or sea elf, give the weapon a name in their tongue first (Nerethune, Ondurrah) and let characters translate it in dialogue; if the wielder is human, use a plain-language name the crew would actually shout.
- Check the sound against the character: a gentle healer of the tides carries Moonpull or Coral Song, not Drowner of Admirals.
Frequently asked questions
What was Poseidon's trident called?
In Greek myth it has no personal name; it is simply the trident, forged by the Cyclopes alongside Zeus's thunderbolt and Hades's helm. That is why modern fiction and games invent names for it, and why names like Triaina (the Greek word for trident) or Oceanus Rex show up here.
Are these names good for a D&D Trident of Fish Command or a homebrew legendary?
Yes. Short compounds like Tidecaller, Brinesong or Kelpbinder work well for uncommon or rare items, while epithet names like The Sceptre of Sunken Ys or Wrath of the Whale Road suit legendary or artifact-tier weapons with a backstory.
Can I use these for a mermaid, triton or Atlantean character's weapon?
That is exactly what the invented-language entries such as Vaelorith, Thalassar and Shal'azir are for. Pair them with a merfolk or triton character name from the related generators so the weapon and wielder share a phonology.
Do trident names have to be about the ocean?
No. Tridents also belong to storm gods, gladiators and demons, so the list includes weather names like Thunderprong and Cyclone Tooth, gladiatorial nicknames like Old Salt, and darker relics like Rot-Tide and Drowner for infernal or undead wielders.
