Merfolk Name Generator

Merfolk names pull from three deep wells. The oldest is Greek myth: the fifty Nereids (Thalassa, Galatea, Nerissa, Ianthe, Psamathe) and the sea gods Nereus, Triton, Proteus, and Glaucus give a mer-kingdom an instantly classical, Little-Mermaid-royal-court sound. Northern and Celtic folklore adds a colder register with names like Melusine, Muirgen, Liban, Ran, and Aegir, while Polynesian, Brazilian, and Yoruba sea spirits (Nāmaka, Iara, Yemaya) suit tropical waters. Real names from these traditions carry the weight of centuries of storytelling.

Modern fantasy adds its own conventions. In D&D, sea elves and tritons use flowing multi-syllable names with lots of L, S, and TH sounds (Vaelith, Ossyla, Thaeros), and tritons take ornate surnames like Ahlorsath or Vuuvaxath. Original fiction often gives merfolk a first name plus a compound sea-word surname (Pearlveil, Tidewhisper, Brinecrest), which works well because the surname doubles as a description of the character's home reef or role.

A strong merfolk name should sound like it was spoken underwater: open vowels, soft consonants, and few hard stops. Choose the tradition that fits your kingdom's climate, then add a title such as Tidecaller or Reefwarden if the character holds a role in the court.
