Names for zoo and aviary toucans, plush toys, mascots and story characters, from bill names like Big Bill, Keel and Sunbeak to puns such as Two-Can and Beak Performance. The list also has rainforest fruit, rivers and places from Belize to the Amazon, and Spanish and Portuguese picks like Señor Pico and Limão.

About toucan names

A toucan is named for its bill before anything else. The bill looks heavy but is light, a thin layer of keratin over a hollow, honeycombed core, and it gives this list its largest group: Big Bill, Keel, Mandible, Culmen and Sunbeak, plus look-alikes such as Canoe, Rudder and Nutcracker. Color comes next. Lime Keel, Tangerine Tip, Yellow Bib and Jet Cap describe the bird piece by piece, and Amarelo, Verde and Azabache say it in Portuguese and Spanish.

Toucans live only in the Americas, from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, so the place names run from Belize, Petén and Monteverde down to the Xingu, the Pantanal and Iguaçu. Spanish calls the bird tucán and the beak pico; Portuguese says tucano and bico. That is where Señor Pico, Dona Bico and Piquito come from. Fruit names such as Açaí, Pitanga, Guanábana and Jabuticaba fit a bird that eats mostly fruit, and Kapok, Ceiba and Cecropia are trees of its forest.

The family also includes the smaller aracaris and toucanets, and the list uses species words like Toco, Aracari, Toucanet and Keel-Billed. For a mascot or a storybook character there are titles (Captain Keel, Professor Pico), dances and instruments (Forró, Marimba, Cuíca), puns on the word toucan, and ready-made pairs for two birds.

How to choose toucan names

  • Match the name to the species. A toco toucan has an orange bill with a black tip and a white throat, so Tangerine Tip, White Bib or Tucanuçu suit it. A keel-billed toucan has a green bill splashed with other colors and a yellow throat, which points to Rainbow Bill, Lime Keel or Yellow Bib.
  • For two birds, pick a pair that already belongs together: Pico & Bico, Keel & Rudder, Lime & Jet, Açaí & Guaraná or Xingu & Tapajós.
  • A plush toy or a classroom mascot does well with something short and bouncy that a child can say, such as Beaklet, Tou-Tou, Tucanito, Figgy or Wee Beak.
  • If you choose a Spanish or Portuguese word, keep its accent when you write it on a sign or a tag. Tucán, Limão and Açaí are the correct spellings, and the accent tells readers how to say the name.
  • Say a pun out loud before you settle on it. Two-Can and Beak Performance work in speech, while a few only land on paper.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a toucan?

Start with the bill, because it is the first thing anyone sees: Big Bill, Keel, Sunbeak and Banana Beak are all in the list. If you want something from the bird's home instead, try Toco, Belize, Xingu, Açaí or Señor Pico.

Are there funny toucan names?

Yes. The list has puns on the word itself, like Two-Can, Yes Toucan and Tou-Cool, and puns on the bill, such as Bill Me Later, Fit the Bill, Beak Performance and Beakfast. Touché and En Garde nod to the way toucans spar with their bills.

What do the Spanish and Portuguese names mean?

Tucán is the Spanish word for the bird and tucano is the Portuguese one. Pico means beak in Spanish and bico means beak in Portuguese, so Señor Pico and Dona Bico are Mr. Beak and Mrs. Beak. Many others are colors or fruit: Verde is green, Amarelo is yellow, Limão is lime or lemon, and Laranja is orange.

How many names are in the list, and what kinds are there?

There are 1,000 names. They cover bill names, plumage colors, tropical fruit, rainforest places, Spanish and Portuguese words, species terms, puns, cute names, habits and calls, titled characters and pairs. Each new batch mixes several of these styles, and the full list is at the end of the page from A to Z. The list was de-duplicated and screened for offensive terms.
