Generate lemur names for a zoo or sanctuary troop, a sponsored lemur, a plush toy, a mascot or a story character: Malagasy words like Kintana (star) and Maki (ring-tailed lemur), Madagascar places like Berenty and Isalo, leaping names like Pogo and Sashay, sun names like Sunbeam, and playful titles like Duke Ringtail.

About lemur names

Lemurs are native to one place only, the island of Madagascar, and the best lemur names start there. This list of 1,000 mixes Malagasy words, each with its meaning in parentheses, such as Kintana (star), Volana (moon) and Maki (ring-tailed lemur, written maky in Malagasy), with the forests, rivers and parks where lemurs live: Berenty, Isalo, Ranomafana, Andasibe. A lemur is a primate but not a monkey. Lemurs sit on their own branch of the primate family tree, separate from monkeys and apes.

The rest of the list follows what lemurs do. Ring-tailed lemurs wave banded tails and sunbathe sitting upright with their arms out, which gives Bangle, Pinstripe, Sunbeam and Lotus Pose. Sifakas cross open ground in sideways hops, hence Pogo, Sashay and Hopscotch. The indri sings, mouse lemurs and the aye-aye come out at night, and ring-tailed troops are led by females, so there are song names, big-eyed night names and plenty of queens and duchesses.

There are also fruit and spice names, soft baby names, pair and troop names, species nods such as Indri and Ruffles, and four famous screen lemurs, labeled with their source. Lemurs are endangered wild animals and are not pets: these names are for zoo, sanctuary and sponsored lemurs, plush toys, mascots and characters.

How to choose lemur names

  • Match the name to the species. Pinstripe, Bangle or Candy Cane suit a ring-tailed lemur, Pogo or Sashay a sifaka, Ruffles a ruffed lemur, and Lantern or Tapper a nocturnal aye-aye.
  • For a zoo or sanctuary troop, pick one theme for the whole group, such as Madagascar places (Berenty, Isalo, Masoala) or spices (Clove, Vanilla, Cardamom), so visitors can learn the family together.
  • If you use a Malagasy word, keep the meaning with it on the sign or the adoption certificate. Kintana (star) or Zavona (mist) tells a small story and points back to the animal's home.
  • Ring-tailed troops are led by females, so a grand title works best on a female: Queen Tamarind, Duchess Fluff or The Matriarch.
  • Say the name out loud in a keeper's voice. Two syllables such as Maki, Pogo or Tammy carry across an enclosure better than a long title, which can stay on the plaque.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a ring-tailed lemur?

Names that point at the banded tail or the morning sunbath fit best: Pinstripe, Bangle, Candy Cane, Humbug, Sunbeam and Lotus Pose are all in the list. Maki is the classic choice, since the ring-tailed lemur is called maky in Malagasy, usually written maki abroad.

Are the Malagasy words in the list real?

Yes. They are everyday Malagasy words, and each one carries its English meaning in parentheses, for example Kintana (star), Volana (moon), Ala (forest) and Mora Mora (take it easy). The list uses ordinary words rather than Malagasy royal names or sacred terms.

Is a lemur a monkey?

No. Lemurs are primates, but they belong to a separate branch from monkeys and apes, and they are native only to Madagascar. That is why this list leans on Madagascar, tails, leaps and sunbathing instead of bananas and jungle vines.

Can I use King Julien or Zoboomafoo as a name?

For a plush toy or a private nickname, of course. The list includes four famous screen lemurs, each labeled with its source, such as King Julien (Madagascar films) and Zoboomafoo (PBS Kids). Those characters belong to their owners and this site is not connected to them, so for a mascot, a book or a game it is better to pick an original name like Duke Ringtail or Captain Canopy.
