500 names for peacocks, peahens and peachicks: jewel and pigment names like Lapis Lazuli and Viridian, royal names like Maharaja and Il Magnifico, names from India and Sri Lanka such as Mayura and Monara, and myth names like Argus and Panoptes.

About peacock names

Strictly, only the male is a peacock. The female is a peahen, the young are peachicks and together they are peafowl. The famous train is not the tail: it is a fan of long feathers that grow from the lower back, most of them ending in an eye-spot called an ocellus, with the short true tail underneath to prop it up. That anatomy opens the list, with Ocellus, Hundred Eyes, Trainbearer and Panache, and with words for shimmer such as Moiré and Cloisonné.

The colors come next, as stones and painters' pigments instead of plain color words: Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Viridian, Verdigris, Zaffre. Breeders' variety names sit beside them (India Blue, Black Shoulder, Cameo, Silver Pied), with lace and porcelain names for a white bird.

The blue peafowl comes from India and Sri Lanka and is India's national bird, so the list borrows the bird's own names there, Mayura in Sanskrit, Mor in Hindi, Mayil in Tamil and Monara in Sinhala, along with gem words such as Neelam, the blue sapphire. From Greek myth comes Argus, the hundred-eyed watchman whose eyes Hera set in the peacock's train. Royal and showy names (Maharaja, Il Magnifico, Showstopper), country-house names (Pemberley, Orangery, Lord of the Lawn) and gentle names for peahens and chicks (Henrietta, Larkspur, Sweet Pea) fill out the rest.

How to choose peacock names

  • A young male takes about three years to grow a full train, so think of the bird he will become. Peapod suits a chick, and Maharaja or Showstopper suits the adult on the lawn.
  • Name a peahen for her own looks. She is brown and cream with a green neck, so Fawn, Tawny, Linen and the garden-party names (Ottoline, Georgiana, Lavinia) fit her better than a jewel does.
  • For a white bird, look at the lace and porcelain names: Chantilly, Bridal Veil, Meissen, Snowdrift, Opal.
  • For a pair or a small flock, keep to one theme: Argus and Io, Raja and Rani, Lapis and Malachite, Sitar and Tabla.
  • For a mascot or a story character, add a title: Count Ocellus, Lady Malachite, Professor Prism, Duke of the Driveway.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a peacock?

Names that point at the plumage or the swagger fit best. Lapis, Malachite, Panache, Maharaja, Argus and Showstopper are all in this list, and so are Mayura and Mor, the Sanskrit and Hindi words for the bird. For a quieter name, try an estate word such as Belvedere or Orangery.

What do you call a female or a baby peacock?

The female is a peahen and the young are peachicks. Peacock is the name of the male only, and peafowl covers all of them. The list has names for each: Henrietta, Fawn and Larkspur for hens, and Peapod, Sweet Pea and Peewee for chicks.

Which names come from India and Sri Lanka?

Mayura is Sanskrit for peacock, Mayur and Mor are Hindi, Mayil is Tamil and Monara is Sinhala, and Morni is a peahen in Hindi. Neelam, Heera, Moti and Panna are gem words: blue sapphire, diamond, pearl and emerald. The rest of that group is places, trees, textiles and music, such as Jaipur, Kandy, Yala, Banyan, Zari and Raga, and it leaves out the names of deities.

Why are there so many eye names in the list?

They come from a Greek myth. The goddess Hera kept a watchman, Argus Panoptes, who had a hundred eyes, and when Hermes killed him she set his eyes in the train of her bird, the peacock. Argus, Panoptes, Hundred Eyes, Never Blinks and Night Watch all come from that story, and Ocellus is the scientific word for a single eye-spot.
