Names for pet, zoo, plush, lawn and pool float flamingos, from pink names like Rosie, Coral and Blush to leggy puns such as Stilts and Flo Mingo. The list also has Florida and Caribbean places, ballet names and retro yard names like Featherstone and Tiki.

About flamingo names

Flamingos are pink because of what they eat. The carotenoid pigments in algae and brine shrimp color the feathers, and chicks hatch gray, which is why the list pairs color names such as Rosie, Coral, Blush and Cerise with diet names like Spirulina, Krill and Carotene. The second big source is the body itself: the long legs, the one-legged rest and the upside-down feeding give Stilts, Tiptoe, Tree Pose, Kickstand and Topsy-Turvy. A group of flamingos is called a flamboyance, and that word is in the list too.

Place names follow the birds. The American flamingo breeds around the Caribbean, so you will find Inagua, Bonaire, Celestún and Havana beside Florida names such as Hialeah, Key West and Biscayne, plus flamingo lakes and lagoons elsewhere, from Natron and Nakuru to the Camargue. Spanish uses one word, flamenco, for both the bird and the dance, which opened the door to Tango, Mambo, Cha-Cha and Fandango.

Plastic flamingos need names as well. The lawn ornament was designed by Don Featherstone in 1957, so Featherstone leads a retro group with Tiki, Cabana, Lawn Ranger and Pool Noodle for yard birds and pool floats. For a graceful bird there are ballet and old Hollywood names such as Giselle, Pirouette, Pavlova and Audrey, and for a joke there is always Flo Mingo.

How to choose flamingo names

  • Name a pair or a flock from one group so they sound like a set: Mai Tai and Mojito, Tango and Mambo, or Blanche, Dorothy and Sophia.
  • The classic lawn flamingos come as a pair, one upright and one bending down. Try a tall name and a dipping name, such as Stilts and Dipper or Tiptoe and Headstand.
  • For a plush toy or a child's pool float, short doubled sounds are easy to say: Fifi, Mimi, Bibi, Pinky or Flo.
  • If the bird is more orange or red than pink, as American flamingos often are, look at Vermilion, Carmine, Papaya, Hibiscus or Sunset.
  • A zoo flock can take names from the places its species lives: Inagua, Bonaire and Celestún for American flamingos, Natron and Nakuru for lesser flamingos, Puna and Uyuni for the Andean species.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a flamingo?

Pink names are the obvious place to start: Rosie, Coral, Blush, Peony and Bubblegum are all in the list. If you would rather have a joke, try Flo Mingo, Stilts, Leg Day or Sir Stands-a-Lot.

What should I call a plastic lawn flamingo?

Featherstone is the tribute name, after Don Featherstone, who designed the plastic lawn flamingo in 1957. Other yard and pool names in the list include Lawn Ranger, Yard Bird, Tiki, Plastic Fantastic and Floatie.

Are there names for a boy flamingo?

Yes. Male and female flamingos look alike, so any name works, but plenty in the list read as masculine: Mingo, Ringo, Django, Rico, Romeo, Valentino, Diego, Bob and Mingus.

Why do some of the names come from dances and drinks?

Spanish uses the word flamenco for both the flamingo and the dance, and the bird is a symbol of Florida and the Caribbean, so dances and beach drinks fit the theme. Examples in the list are Tango, Salsa, Rumba, Mai Tai, Piña Colada and Key Lime.
