Dachshund Name Generator
German, sausage and long-dog names for dachshunds
Names for dachshunds in the styles owners of the breed use: German names like Fritz, Liesl and Hansi, sausage and deli names like Bratwurst, Pretzel and Pastrami, long-and-low jokes like Limo and Two Dogs Long, digging names like Tunnel and Brock, coat names, and pairs such as Franks and Beans.
About dachshund names
Dachshund is German for badger dog: Dachs is the badger and Hund the dog, and the breed was developed in Germany to follow badgers and other burrowing animals underground. In Germany the dogs are usually called Dackel or Teckel. That history gives the list two of its strands. About a fifth of it is German given names and pet words, from Fritz, Otto and Liesl to Schatzi and Struppi, and another part is digging names: Tunnel, Burrow, Spade, Earthdog, and Brock, Dachs, Tasso and Blaireau, which all mean badger.
The shape of the dog supplies the rest. English speakers call it the wiener dog or sausage dog, so the largest strand is the deli counter: Bratwurst, Kielbasa, Pretzel, Mustard, Gherkin, Pastrami. Long-and-low jokes come next (Limo, Accordion, Freight Train, Two Dogs Long), then big-dog names worn with a straight face by a small dog, such as Goliath, Bulldozer and Big Boss.
There are also coat names for smooth, long-haired and wire-haired dogs in red, cream, chocolate, dapple and piebald, a run of puns like Count Dachula, and about one entry in ten is a ready-made pair, because dachshunds are so often kept in twos. The styles are mixed through the list, so every batch shows several at once.
How to choose dachshund names
- Keep the call name to one or two syllables (Fritz, Brat, Limo, Brock) and save the long joke, such as Dragged Through the Garden or Get a Long Little Doggie, for the vet's paperwork.
- Match the name to the coat. A red smooth suits Russet, Conker or Cognac, a wire-haired dog suits Scruffy, Bristles, Gramps or Steel Wool, a long-haired one suits Silky, Feathers or Goldilocks, and a dapple or piebald can carry Confetti, Paisley, Pollock or Pinto.
- Say a German name out loud before you commit. The J in Jürgen and Jutta sounds like an English Y, the W in Waldmann and Wurst like a V, and Liesl is said LEE-zul.
- For two dachshunds, choose a pair that belongs together without sounding alike, such as Pretzel and Mustard, Tunnel and Bridge or Otto and Ida. Fritz and Franz looks good on a pair of bowls, but names that close are hard for two dogs to tell apart.
- Steer clear of names that sound like the cues you plan to teach. Sett is a fine badger word but sounds just like sit, and Spade is close to stay.
Frequently asked questions
What are good names for a dachshund?
The names that stick tend to describe the dog. For the shape, try Frank, Oscar, Pretzel, Noodle, Stretch or Slinky. For the German roots, Fritz, Otto, Greta and Heidi are the classics, and for a dog that digs up the lawn there are Digger, Tunnel, Badger and Mole. An ironic big-dog name such as Tank, Moose or Brutus is a breed tradition of its own.
What are good German names for a dachshund?
Short given names work best as call names: Fritz, Otto, Hansi, Dieter and Sepp for males, and Greta, Heidi, Liesl, Lotta, Resi and Vroni for females. German pet words are here too, including Schatzi (little treasure), Spatz (sparrow), Knopf (button), Flitzer (speedster) and Strolch (scamp). Dackel and Teckel, the everyday German words for the breed, are in the list as well.
What should I name two dachshunds?
About one name in ten on the list is a ready-made pair. Some come from the deli (Franks and Beans, Ketchup and Mustard, Bangers and Mash, Pastrami and Rye), some from Germany (Hansel and Gretel, Max and Moritz, Bach and Brahms) and some from the shape and habits of the dog (Long and Short, Stretch and Slinky, Digger and Dozer). You can also take any two single names from one style, such as Pretzel and Strudel.
Why do so many dachshunds have sausage names?
A long body on short legs looks like a sausage, which is why English speakers call the breed the wiener dog or sausage dog. Wiener means Viennese, as in Vienna sausage, and frankfurter comes from the city of Frankfurt, so even the joke names point back to German-speaking Europe. The list runs with it, from Frankfurter, Knackwurst and Footlong to Chili Dog, Extra Mustard and Hold the Onions.
