About penguin names

Penguin names tend to come from one of a few places: the ice they live on, the tuxedo they appear to wear, the way they move, and the small pool of famous penguins most people grew up with. Waddles, Pebbles and Flippers are the classic pet-style names; Tux, Bowtie and Sir Waddlesworth play on the formal black-and-white plumage; and Pingu, Mumble, Skipper and Feathers McGraw carry instant recognition from film and TV.

If you want something more distinctive, the real world offers plenty. There are 18 penguin species and their names make excellent characters on their own: Adélie, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Macaroni, Chinstrap and Humboldt. New Zealand's Māori names for its native penguins (Hoiho, Kororā, Tawaki) sound lovely and are rarely used. Antarctic explorers (Shackleton, Amundsen, Mawson) and research stations (McMurdo, Vostok, Halley) give a rugged, expedition feel, while ice vocabulary like Floe, Nunatak, Sastrugi and Frazil is unusual enough to stand out at a zoo naming contest.

A good penguin name usually fits the bird's size and attitude. Emperor and king penguins carry grand names well; little blue and rockhopper penguins suit short, bouncy ones like Peep, Nippy or Squidge. Krill, Sardine and Anchovy are cheerful choices for anyone who wants a name with a wink to the diet.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the species: regal names (Emperor, Wilhelmina, Admiral Frostbeak) suit tall emperor and king penguins, while little blue and rockhopper penguins fit short, punchy names like Peep, Nippy or Squidge.
  • For a pair or colony, pick a theme and stick to it: explorers (Shackleton and Amundsen), ice terms (Floe and Berg), or fish (Krill and Capelin).
  • Names based on the black-and-white coat (Tux, Domino, Oreo, Piano) are the most popular for plush and zoo penguins, so choose one of the rarer options if you want yours to stand out.
  • For a story or game character, give the penguin a personality-first name (Waddlebottom, Pebble Thief, Captain Slush) and let it hint at how they behave.
  • Say the name out loud in a sentence like 'Come here, ___!' — the best penguin names are two or three syllables and easy to shout across a rookery.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most famous penguin names?

Pingu (the claymation series), Mumble and Gloria (Happy Feet), Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private (Madagascar), Feathers McGraw (Wallace & Gromit), Opus (Bloom County), Chilly Willy and Cody Maverick (Surf's Up) are the ones most people recognise instantly.

Why do so many penguin names reference pebbles or stones?

Adélie and gentoo penguins build nests from pebbles, and males famously present a chosen pebble to a mate. Names like Pebbles, Pebble Thief and Stone Collector nod to that real behaviour.

Are penguins from the Arctic or the Antarctic?

Antarctic and the Southern Hemisphere only — there are no wild penguins in the Arctic. That is why the list leans on southern places (Erebus, McMurdo, Falkland, Boulders Beach) and the aurora australis rather than 'arctic' or 'north' themes.

Can I use these penguin names for a mascot, zoo animal or product?

Yes. Descriptive and original names are free to use anywhere; just avoid trademarked characters (Pingu, Pororo, the Madagascar penguins) for anything commercial.
