About Templar names

A Knight Templar did not have a surname in the modern sense. He was a given name plus the place he came from, joined by a particle in his own language: Hugues de Payens, Gérard de Ridefort, Brian de Jay, Gualdim Pais, Dietrich von Hohenfels. The given names came from the small Frankish and Norman pool of the 12th and 13th centuries, so Guillaume, Hugues, Geoffroi, Raoul, Renaud, Thibaut, Baudouin, Amaury and Foulques appear again and again in the Order's rolls, and the place was usually a castle, village or lordship in Champagne, Burgundy, Poitou, the Languedoc, Normandy or England, where the Temple held its richest estates.

Inside the Order a knight was simply Brother (Frère) followed by his name, and rank came from office rather than birth: Grand Master, Seneschal, Marshal, Commander, Preceptor, Draper, Turcopolier. Sergeant-brothers of non-noble birth and chaplain-brothers used the same forms. Brothers serving in Outremer were often identified by their posting, Brother Osric of Tortosa or of Acre.

The list below mixes the real Grand Masters and documented Templars with original names that follow those rules, plus a handful of fantasy templars and a few well-known Templars from Assassin's Creed for players who arrive from that direction.

How to choose Templar names

  • Keep the particle consistent with the knight's origin: de for French and Anglo-Norman, of for English, von for German, da for Italian, and no particle at all for many Iberian names (Gualdim Pais, Martim Gil).
  • Pick a real small place rather than a famous city. Gaucher de Marigny sounds like a Templar; Jean de Paris sounds like a guess.
  • Historical Templars were all male and took vows, so for a woman in a fiction setting either write an original order or use the fantasy-templar names here, which work for either gender.
  • Use a rank only when it matters. One Grand Master per story is plenty; most of your cast should be plain brother-knights and sergeants.

Frequently asked questions

What were the real Knights Templar called?

The Order's full name was the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon. Individual knights were known by a given name and place of origin, such as Hugues de Payens (the founder) or Jacques de Molay (the last Grand Master), and addressed as Brother.

Which historical Templars are included?

All 23 Grand Masters from Hugues de Payens to Jacques de Molay, the nine founding knights, Masters of England such as Brian de Jay and William de la More, Iberian and Portuguese Templars like Gualdim Pais and Berenguer de Cardona, and brothers named in the 1307 trial records such as Hugues de Pairaud and Geoffroi de Charney.

Can I use these for a D&D paladin or a video game templar?

Yes. The historical form (Renaud de Vichiers) suits any holy-order knight, and the fantasy section gives names like Aldric Valcourt and Roderic Ashvane that fit a templar or paladin in D&D, Dark Sun, WoW or an original setting. Assassin's Creed Templars such as Haytham Kenway are listed for reference.

Did Templars have last names?

Rarely. A few carried a family name or nickname (Thomas Bérard, Gilbert Hérail, Roger de Flor), but most were identified by where they came from, and that identifier could change if a knight moved or inherited land.
