Crusader Name Generator

A crusader was named for where he came from, not for a family. The men who marched east in 1096 and after were Godfrey of Bouillon, Raymond of Toulouse, Bohemond of Taranto, Robert of Flanders: a given name from a small Christian pool (Baldwin, Hugh, Raymond, Fulk, Geoffrey, Walter, Guy, Amalric) plus the lordship, town or castle he held, joined by of, de, von, di or da depending on his language. Once settled in the Holy Land the same habit produced the lords of Outremer, named for the fortresses they garrisoned: Balian of Ibelin, Reynald of Châtillon, Humphrey of Toron, Hugh of Gibelet, Raoul of Beaufort.

Epithets were the other layer. Chroniclers told men apart by body and character, which gives us Walter Sans Avoir, Richard the Lionheart, Leopold the Glorious and Sigurd Jorsalfar, the Jerusalem-Farer. Military-order brothers dropped titles and went by Brother plus a name and a house.

This generator mixes documented figures from the First through the Ninth Crusade with original names built the same way, so you can pull a historically sound roster for a novel or a Crusader Kings character, or a heroic fantasy crusader with an English-style byname like Aldric Crossvane. Match the particle to the knight's homeland, keep the given-name pool narrow, and it will sound right.
