Sturgian Name Generator
Rus and Norse names for Bannerlord's northern principality
Generate Sturgian names for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord in the style of Raganvad, Olek and Svana: given names such as Bragun and Oleva, full names with an -oving clan like Bragun Velmoving, titled boyars such as Boyar Volgast, druzhina bynames, and river traders like Miloved the Ferryman.
About Sturgian names
Sturgia is the northern principality of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, a land of forests and frozen rivers whose culture blends the early Rus with Norse settlers from the coast. Its names follow that mix. The game's own Sturgians (Raganvad, Olek, Godun, Simir, Svana) pair Slavic stems with hard, short endings, and its noble clans end in -oving: Gundaroving, Vagiroving, Kuloving, Isyaroving, Togaroving.
This list holds 1,000 names in that style. Those five names from the game are included as anchors. Every other entry is built on Slavic and Norse stems to match that sound, so some coincide with real old names; the full names carry invented clans such as Velmoving, Dubroving and Hrimoving. Men's names tend to end in -ad, -un, -ir, -ek, -mir and -vid (Bragun, Stanvid, Bazhimir); women's names end in -a, often -ava or -ila (Oleva, Sigrava, Kresila).
The rest is the cast of a Sturgian campaign: boyars, princes and voivodes with a title, druzhina warriors with a battle byname, Nord-descended sailors with Norse-leaning names, river traders and woodsmen named for a trade or a place, wanderers with an epithet, and short forms and village nicknames. Boyar, knyaz and voivode are the old Rus words for a noble, a prince and a war leader. This is a fan-made list with no connection to TaleWorlds.
How to choose Sturgian names
- For a noble, pair a given name with a clan ending in -oving, as in Bragun Velmoving. A commoner or companion takes a byname instead: a trade, a place or an epithet, as in Miloved the Ferryman.
- Keep the sound hard and short. Two or three syllables with an ending such as -un, -ad, -ek or -vid for men and -ava or -ila for women sit well beside the game's own lords.
- Give a character from the coast a Norse-leaning name (Sigvad, Gunvora) and a forest or river character a Slavic one (Tverdun, Zvenika), so the history of your clan shows in its names.
- To found a clan of your own, take the founder's name or a short stem and add -oving. Look through the in-game encyclopedia first so you do not repeat a clan that is already in your campaign.
- Name heirs in the same style as their parents so the family tree reads as one Sturgian line.
Frequently asked questions
What are Sturgian names based on?
Sturgia draws on the early medieval Rus, with a Norse strand from settlers along the northern coast. Names in that style use Slavic stems, hard consonants and short endings, and noble clans end in -oving. The list keeps to that pattern with originals such as Bragun, Yarovek and Oleva.
Are these names from the game?
Five of them are: Raganvad, Olek, Godun, Simir and Svana are Sturgian nobles in Bannerlord and are here as style anchors, and ten place bynames use Sturgian towns such as Balgard and Sibir. The other names are built on Slavic and Norse stems in the same sound, so some coincide with real old names, and clans such as Velmoving, Dubroving and Hrimoving are invented. It is a fan list in the style of the setting, with no link to TaleWorlds.
What is the -oving ending in a Sturgian name?
It is the ending the game gives its Sturgian noble clans, as in Gundaroving or Kuloving. The game shows a lord's clan apart from the given name; on this list the clan follows the given name like a family name, so a full name such as Bragun Velmoving or Zvenika Klenoving is a given name plus an invented clan. The commoners and wanderers on the list go without a clan and use a byname instead.
Can I use these names outside Bannerlord?
Yes. They suit any setting with a Rus or Norse flavor: the Vaegirs and Nords of Mount & Blade: Warband, a tabletop campaign in a northern forest realm, or a story of your own. Titled entries such as Boyar Volgast and bynames such as Vsegor the Wall work wherever a prince keeps a hall and a war band.
