About Nerubian names
Nerubians are the spider people of Azjol-Nerub in World of Warcraft, and their names have a sound of their own. It is hard and dry, built on k, z, kh and th, with endings such as -ek, -ox, -azj, -ar and -et, and it leans on the feel of ancient Egypt without borrowing real Egyptian names. An apostrophe often splits a name after its first element, as in Anub'arak and Krik'thir, and the same first element can turn up on several names.
Rank matters as much as the name. Nerubian names often come with an office or an epithet: Vizier, Executor, Crypt Lord, Queen, Widow, Skeinspinner, or a byname such as the Gatewatcher. This list puts each title on only a handful of names, so you can lift one off and set it on another.
The 500 names fall into eight styles: Anub' names, other apostrophe names, single hard names like Hadronox, softer royal and brood names, court and war titles, epithet names, short names of one or two syllables, and longer names with a place or a byname. A few names in the list come from the game itself as style anchors, and the FAQ names them. The rest were drafted for this page in the same pattern, and none is official.
How to choose Nerubian names
- Use one apostrophe and put it after the first element: Zek'irash reads as Nerubian, while three apostrophes in one name read as noise.
- Keep the vowels. Thanurek can be called out in a raid or at a table, and a string of clicks cannot.
- Match the title to the role you play: Vizier or Seer for a schemer or caster, Crypt Lord or General for a front-line fighter, Skeinspinner or Widow for a plotter in the shadows.
- World of Warcraft character names are letters only, with no spaces or apostrophes and 12 letters at most, so Zek'irash becomes Zekirash in the name field and the title goes in your roleplay profile.
- For a brood or a court, pick names that share an opening, such as three Azj' names or three Rekh' names, so they read as one family.
Frequently asked questions
What do Nerubian names sound like?
Hard and dry, with k, z, kh and th sounds, an Egyptian-tinged shape and often a single apostrophe. Azj'ureth, Mezzarok, Nekhavox and Rekh'azir from this list show the pattern. Royal and brood names run a little softer, as in Thisarra and Queen Azmeress.
Which titles go with Nerubian names?
The list uses Vizier, Executor, Crypt Lord, Queen, Widow, Princess, Seer, Orator, Skeinspinner and a few more, as in Vizier Tazmurek, Crypt Lord Arkhuzon and Skeinspinner Ikzemet. Each title sits on only a few names, so feel free to move one to a name you like better.
Are these names from World of Warcraft itself?
Eleven are: Anub'arak, Anub'Rekhan, Krik'thir, Ki'katal, Hadronox, Ansurek, Takazj, Nizrek, Neferess, Kilix and Sikran are names of characters in the game, kept as style anchors. All the others were drafted for this page in the same pattern and are not official names, though a drafted name can match a minor character by chance. Can I use a Nerubian name for a spider character in another game?
Yes. The plainer names, such as Zurekhan, Thisarra or Okhrim the Patient, suit any spider folk, insect empire or tomb kingdom in a tabletop campaign. Names that open with Anub' or Azj' point most clearly at Warcraft, so skip those if you want a setting of your own.
