Generate shabti names for Pathfinder: Egyptian-style names with a byname about the bargain, such as Menkhaf the Answerer, Tjenna Clay-Born and Khaemet the Released. The list holds 1,000 names for Osirion's crafted stand-ins, from royal likenesses to short everyday names.

About shabti names

In Pathfinder, shabti are crafted people of Osirion: figures made to stand in for a ruler or noble at judgment in the afterlife, who came to have a life of their own. The names on this page carry two layers. The first is an ancient Egyptian style personal name, often the name of the mortal the shabti was made for. The second is a byname about the bargain: Menkhaf the Answerer, Sethirion Who Stood Proxy, Tjenna Clay-Born, Khaemet the Released.

The idea comes from real funerary figurines. Egyptian tombs held shabti, also called ushabti, meant to answer "Here I am" when the dead were called to work. They were made of faience, wood, stone, clay or wax, often carried hoes and baskets, and later burials could hold 401: a worker for each day of the year plus 36 overseers. The craft, tool and number bynames here borrow from that.

The 1,000 names mix real ancient Egyptian personal names with original names built in the same style, and they are not marked apart, so treat none of them as history or as official Pathfinder material. A small share echo real rulers, such as Khufu's Answerer or Hatshepsut's Likeness. About one name in eight is a plain or short everyday name, like Menk or Glaze, for shabti living among mortals.

How to choose shabti names

  • Start with the mortal. Decide who your shabti was made for, give that person a name, then let the shabti carry it with a marker such as the Second, Likeness of or Shadow of.
  • Pick the byname by where the character stands with the bargain. Answerer and proxy bynames suit a shabti who still feels the duty; Released, Self-Named or Own-Hearted suit one who has walked away from it.
  • Use a craft byname to describe the body. Clay-Born, Faience-Eyed, Blue-Glazed or Cedar-Carved tells the table what the character looks like in two words.
  • Keep a short name for daily use. A shabti introduced at court as Meryt Second-of-Her-Name can be plain Meryt, or just Glaze, to the rest of the party.
  • Number names such as Overseer of Ten or Third of the Four Hundred fit a shabti made as one of a set, and they work well for a whole group of NPCs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a shabti in Pathfinder?

Shabti are crafted people tied to Osirion, made to stand in for a ruler or noble at judgment in the afterlife, and they came to have a life of their own. This page is an unofficial fan resource with no connection to Paizo. Its names are suggestions written in that style, not a list of official names.

How are these shabti names put together?

Most names on this page pair an ancient Egyptian style personal name with a byname about the bargain. The byname can mark the copy (Meryt Second-of-Her-Name, Shadow of Merneith), the duty (Menkhaf the Answerer, Sethirion Who Stood Proxy), the making (Tjenna Clay-Born) or the freedom that came after (Khaemet the Released).

Are these real ancient Egyptian names?

Some are. The list mixes real ancient Egyptian personal names with original names built in the same style and does not mark which is which, so do not use it as a historical source. A small share echo real rulers on purpose, for example Khufu's Answerer, Tiye's Answerer and Hatshepsut's Likeness. The bynames are made up for this page, though a few borrow real Egyptian titles and epithets such as True-of-Voice and Lord of the Two Lands.

Where do the answerer and number names come from?

From the funerary figurines that share the name. Real shabti, also called ushabti, were tomb figures meant to answer "Here I am" when the dead were called to work, and later burials could hold 401 of them: 365 workers and 36 overseers. Names like Aset-Iri Here-Am-I, Overseer of Ten and Third of the Four Hundred play on that.
