Generate a clan or family name for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord that matches your culture, from Vlandian dey houses and Sturgian -oving lines to Battanian fen clans, Aserai Banu tribes, Khuzait steppe clans and Imperial families, plus mercenary company names.

About bannerlord clan names

Bannerlord asks for your clan name in the first minute of character creation, and it then appears on every banner, encyclopedia page and diplomacy screen for the rest of the campaign. The trick to a name that feels native is to copy the pattern the game already uses for its own clans. Vlandian houses take the particle dey, as in dey Meroc, dey Arromanc and dey Cortain, echoing Norman nobility. Sturgian clans are patronymics ending in -oving (Gundaroving, Vagiroving, Isyaroving), with Rus and Norse roots. Battanian clans use fen plus a Celtic name (fen Gruffendoc, fen Uthelhain, fen Eigh). Aserai tribes are Banu or Beni followed by an Arabic founder (Banu Sarran, Banu Qild, Banu Hulyan). Khuzait clans are single steppe words, often borrowed from real Mongol and Turkic tribes (Khuzait, Arkit, Kiyat, Karakhuzait), and Imperial families carry Greek and Roman endings like Pethros, Comnos, Argoron and Leonipardes.

This list gives you the canon clans for reference, then hundreds of original names written in each of those six styles, plus names for the minor factions and mercenary companies (Hidden Hand, Skolderbroda, Company of the Golden Boar) if you would rather play a sellsword outfit than a noble line. Pick the culture you chose at character creation, or deliberately clash it for a family of exiles settling far from home.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the particle to your starting culture: dey for Vlandia, fen for Battania, Banu for Aserai, an -oving ending for Sturgia, a bare Greek-style name for the Empire, a short steppe word for Khuzait.
  • Your clan name is shown after your character name in the encyclopedia, so check that the two read well together (Harlan dey Brevant, Oleg Radoving, Sahir Banu Kharaz).
  • If you plan to found a kingdom, pick a clan name that can become a dynasty: something like dey Hautrive or Kastellos ages better than a joke name once your heirs inherit it.
  • Use a mercenary-company name (Company of the Red Ash, Grey Legion) if you intend to stay a sellsword clan for most of the campaign; it explains why you have no fiefs.
  • Keep it to one or two words under about 20 characters so it fits on the banner editor and the clan screen without truncation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my clan name in Bannerlord after starting?

Yes. Open the clan screen (L by default) and click the clan name at the top to edit it at any time, so you can start with one name and rename the clan when you take your first fief or found a kingdom.

What are the real clan names in Bannerlord?

Each culture has a handful of noble clans: Vlandia has dey Meroc, dey Arromanc, dey Cortain, dey Fortes and others; Sturgia has Gundaroving, Vagiroving and Isyaroving; Battania has fen Gruffendoc, fen Uthelhain and fen Eigh; the Aserai have Banu Sarran, Banu Qild and Banu Hulyan; the Khuzait have Khuzait, Arkit and Kiyat; the Empires have Pethros, Comnos, Argoron and Leonipardes. They appear at the top of this list.

Does my clan name affect gameplay?

No, it is purely cosmetic. It appears on your banner tooltip, in the encyclopedia, in dialogue and in kingdom diplomacy, so its only effect is immersion. A culture-appropriate name simply makes those screens read like the game wrote them.

Is a clan name the same as a family name in Bannerlord?

In practice yes. Bannerlord treats the clan as an extended family, so your spouse, children and siblings all carry the clan name, and the name you enter at character creation doubles as your family surname.
