Inventor Name Generator

Inventor characters show up everywhere from steampunk novels to kids' cartoons, and the name usually does a lot of work in establishing the type. The classic fictional inventor has a Victorian or Edwardian feel: a slightly old-fashioned given name (Thaddeus, Octavia, Ignatius, Wilhelmina) and a surname with texture, often two syllables or more, ending in -worth, -ley, -ton or -croft. Add "Professor" or "Dr." and the reader immediately pictures a cluttered workshop. Many writers also lean on Germanic or Central European surnames because of the era when so many famous patents came out of that region.

Modern and near-future inventors read differently. The convincing ones have ordinary, grounded names from a specific culture, the kind a real engineer in Lagos, Bangalore, Seoul or São Paulo would have, with the credibility coming from the character's work rather than a quirky name. A third register is the nickname: Gearhead Gus, Sparks McAllister, Blueprint Bessie. These belong to folk heroes, garage tinkerers and comic relief, and they tell you the character's obsession before they speak.

This generator mixes all three so you can match the name to the tone of your story. Pick the register first, then look for a name whose rhythm fits how often it will be said aloud.
