Generate pharaoh names for kings and queens of ancient Egypt: real rulers from every dynasty, their throne names and Horus names, and original royal names built from the same elements. Useful for historical fiction, fantasy kingdoms and tabletop campaigns set along the Nile.

About pharaoh names

A pharaoh did not have one name; he had five. The two that matter most are the birth name, given at birth and usually honouring a god (Thutmose, 'born of Thoth'; Ramesses, 'Ra has fashioned him'), and the throne name, taken at coronation and almost always ending in -re for Ra: Menkheperre ('enduring is the manifestation of Ra'), Nebmaatre ('Ra is lord of truth'), Usermaatre ('powerful is the truth of Ra'). Contemporaries used the throne name, which is why Ramesses II appears in foreign letters as Usermaatre Setepenre. Older still is the Horus name, which is how the earliest kings like Narmer and Den were known.

This generator mixes all of those layers. You will find birth names of real rulers from every dynasty, including obscure Second Intermediate Period kings and the Kushite and Ptolemaic rulers who came later; throne names on their own, which make excellent names for fictional kings; Horus names such as Netjerikhet and Sematawy; female pharaohs from Merneith to Twosret; and original names assembled from the same building blocks (neb, kheper, maat, user, sekhem, ankh, hotep) so they sound royal without belonging to a real tomb.

Read a throne name and a birth name together, as in Nebpehtire Ahmose, and you have the form an Egyptian scribe would have carved.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give an invented pharaoh both a birth name and a throne name. Birth names honour a god (Amenemhat, Ramesses, Sobekhotep); throne names end in -re and make a statement about Ra (Sekhemkare, Wahibre, Nubkaure). Pairing them instantly reads as authentic.
  • Match the sound to the era. Old Kingdom kings have short, blunt names (Khufu, Unas, Teti, Pepi); New Kingdom names are long and pious (Amenhotep, Thutmose, Horemheb); Late Period names often begin with Psamtik, Necho or Nectanebo; Kushite rulers have names like Taharqa and Aspelta.
  • Use epithets sparingly. Meryamun ('beloved of Amun') and Setepenre ('chosen of Ra') were added by real kings, but one per name is plenty; stacking three makes a character sound like a parody.
  • Female pharaohs used the same titulary. Hatshepsut's throne name was Maatkare and Sobekneferu's was Sobekkare, so a fictional queen regnant should get a full set of names, not a softened one.
  • For a fantasy setting, swap the god in a real name for one of your own: replace Amun in Amenhotep or Sobek in Sobekhotep with your setting's deity and the structure still sounds Egyptian.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a pharaoh's birth name and throne name?

The birth name (nomen) was given at birth and often honours a god: Tutankhamun means 'living image of Amun'. The throne name (prenomen) was chosen at coronation, almost always names Ra, and was the name used in official documents: Tutankhamun's was Nebkheperure. Both were written inside cartouches, and many rulers here are listed by each.

Why do so many pharaoh names end in -re or -ra?

Because throne names are short sentences about the sun god Ra, written in Egyptian word order with the god's name placed first for honour but pronounced last. Menkheperre, Usermaatre, Khakaure and Nebmaatre all follow this pattern, which is why a made-up name ending in -re sounds royal to anyone who knows the real lists.

Were there female pharaohs?

Yes. Sobekneferu, Hatshepsut, Neferneferuaten, Twosret and Cleopatra VII all ruled as king in their own right, and earlier women such as Merneith and Nitocris may have done so too. They took full royal titularies, so Hatshepsut is listed here as Hatshepsut Maatkare just as a male king would be.

Can I use these names for a fantasy world rather than historical Egypt?

Yes. The original names near the end are built from real Egyptian elements like neb, kheper, ankh and hotep but do not belong to any known ruler, so they fit a desert kingdom in D&D or a novel without implying a real person. The throne names on their own also work well as names for fictional dynasties.
